pretty much this girl acted like a rental car. The guy didn't have a ride, he rented a car, then he bought himself what he wanted when he saw the opportunity.

As much as you find me a dick, and as much you'll find this a dick post, I assure you it's true. Maybe not from a females viewpoint, but a male's.
Don't try. Your relationship won't be the same, ever again. The more you stay attached, the harder the fall will hurt. Once guys lose interest, it's just... it doesn't work. I can't really identify with your relationship because I don't know you nor your ex, but these are... facts?
