I kinda wanna make something like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSZ0qfY2Vf0&feature=related

so i have a usb to camera cable and an icute dc 12v case fan but its from a desktop case so the there are two plastic covers which im not sure to do? should i just could this part off and just use the red and black wire or do i need the yellow wire too

is 12v too much for my usb ports to handle? how much volts can my usb ports handle?

im using a compaq presario f767nr laptop

12v is way to much. USB out is only 5v. The yellow wire could be for variable speed. Take a 9v battery connect black to neg terminal and pos to yellow wire, should spin up.

so it worked i used a usb to mini usb cable
but sadly the speed of the fan is low

it only lowers my comp by like 3-5c

i guess ill try batteries , but wont the battery last very long?
also is it worth connecting 2 usb cables togethers so i get a total of 10v?

You could always just build yourself a small amplification circuit that would ramp up the 5v to 12v. As for the twin usb, you would have to make a circuit that had 2 usb connectors and test to see if it does indeed produce your needed 10v.

You may be able to find something ready made that will do this, but I have no idea of what it would cost. If this were something I needed I'd just design and build the circuit myself. You could build one for less than $20 with parts from Radio Shack, or just about any good electronics store (not Best Buy, but actual electronic components).

http://www.circuit-projects.com/converter-circuits/usb-5v-to-12v-dc-dc-step-up-converter-by-lt1618.html

This page includes schematic. You should be able to take this somewhere show them and they can get you all you need.

Another option if is you have a friend or you yourself have an old external hard drive enclosure. Those have what you require. They take the USB 5v and ramp it up to handle the 12v needed by a drive. Whether you have the skills to hack the hardware, I don't know. If you are interested in electronics this could be a fun project for you.
