Put a torch under a pile of sand: Floating sand. Water comes near: torch dies, sand drops.

EDIT: Better locks out there nowadays.

It was the one where you had an underwater plank base, you encased it in glass or something

Oh, an airlock that allows you to go from water to dry?
Just make your entrance slant above water, it won't rise.

Quick diagram:

W = water
D = wall
A = air

Little proof of concept, removed the floor of my underwater base's entrance

That's my test map. A shitty snow map. Only have a small base and a few gizmo's I wanted to test.

My other one's currently undergoing a transfer from cave bound to being-awesome-ontop-of-bamboo houses.

Oh, quick question, does snow (not ice) freeze water?

Yeah. If your water is in an open spot (uncovered) snowfall will freeze it.

Oh dear god, I just made a 15*15*15 pool, put like 20 torches down all around and near the middle of the pool, filled it with water, made my airlock, and now I'm linking all my other things to it with cobblestone tunnels.

FUCK.

Torches melt ice in a 3gu wide circle.
So you can use that to keep it open.
