Yes, why would we be the only one?

For all we know, there could've been other lifeforms, but they couldn't evolve and they died already.

Sure there are extra terrestrials.

In our solar system? I doubt it.

But definitely out there.

Actually the evidence of water/methane on some of jupiters moons suggest possible life. But you're right, it is unlikely.

I would say for most life to exist, especially intelligent life, conditions do need to be practically perfect, such as they are on earth. It seems that everyone generally accepts that water is required for life, yet the same people believe that water-based lifeforms can live in extreme environments and still be intelligent.

Water is the basis for life because it has so many properties, especially the ability to vaporize at a certain temperature (allowing us to regulate body heat among other things), along with all the other basic nutrients life requires... they are only efficient at the temperature we are comfortable with.

If we were too hot, we would burn up and melt... if we were too cold, we would freeze. There's no way that life could adapt to such extreme conditions because in order for life to exist, it needs proteins and amino acids, which as far as we know, need certain elements that can't be replaced.

But, the universe is extremely huge, and we have examined such an inconceivably small percentage of it.

The rarity of life would certainly explain why we exist on this seemingly perfect planet out of all the other conscious lifeforms we could have been born as. But it doesn't explain why we exist in this time, right when things truly are perfect (computers, language, media, just everything could not have been more "perfect", even in the future it will not be as perfect as it was around the year 2000 because things will be too good and therefor less realistic and perfect).

Sure the world population has doubled, but that doesn't make up for the millions of years that humans have already been around. Assuming we are the only planet in the universe with perfectly intelligent life, even just the chances of being born around the 20th or 21st century is one in trillions.

There are some types of bacteria called 'extremophiles' that can survive in extreme levels of temperature. Now given the fact that bacteria has been found on other large masses within space who knows what these 'extremophiles' can evolve into?

*Most don't rely on water.
*Can withstand immense pressure & temp.
*Some are found to be in volcanoes.

You can't assume a planet needs to be 'earth like' to contain intelligence.
Yes, what you're saying is true, however it is extremely unlikely.

I never said that the chance of intelligent life was 100% impossible, I just said it was extremely unlikely.

Codeslinger's post above pretty much sums up what I've been trying to explain the entire time.
