My question is generally what the difference is. Like i was playing Far Cry 2 on ultra high, and I did directx9 and 10 and i really didn't see a graphical difference. Performance I think i might have done better in 9. So is 10 better than 9? or vice versa? Or does it vary?

Programmers from the Far Cry 2 era did not fully utilize DX10. The differences are subtle, mainly being better smoke and shadows. If developers used DX10 better, than you'd see better performance and better graphics.

When used correctly, DX10 is faster. PS2 emulation is faster in DX10

99% of what can be done in DX10, can be done in DX9. Games where DX10 magically looks better is a marketing gimmick, plain and simple.

(To put it in simple terms) DX10 is more flexible, the fixed function pipeline is gone, a lot more stuff is programmable now. DX10 certainly IS faster from, but driver support still seems a little lacking in some areas. Draw calls and state changes can easily wreck you in DX9, but they are far cheaper in DX10. "Do more with less".

Some games have been faster though. Far Cry 2 seemed to have went up in performance in DX10, and lately, RE5 is a good example of this, it's faster than DX9 on nvidia hardware. ATI, not so much. Probably will come up to par when ATI gets around to optimizing for the title.

DX10 didn't really do too well though, and DX10.1 didn't help the fact. DX11 I imagine will have much better staying power, and it further ties up a lot of stupid loose ends.

Those pics seem to be comparing DirectX 9.0a/b (SM 2.0, VM 2.0) to DirectX 9.0c/10 (SM 3.0/4.0).

Which one would be better for cryisis warhead? DX 10 or DX9? I do see a difference in DX9 and 10 with Crysis But dx9 is a lot faster.

hey, i'm not sure but only video cards that support direct x 10 can have it, right? i have a xfx nvidia geforce 9400 gt.

You need to run Vista or 7 to use DX10. Assuming you're running either of the two, the only advice I could give you would be to be sure your drivers are up to date.

Price is a subjective matter. The best price/performance ratio you'll find will probably be with an HD4850. There's a few on Newegg for around $90 (link).

i see. i have xp :p so i assume that means no directx all together.
and i doubt my power supply is good enough.
i have a 460 watt, is that enough?

EDIT: i prefer nvidia. radeon's been giving me too many problems.
