|
|
I'm currently working on a system with the following specs:
Asus P5Q
Intel Core 2 Quad processor
8GB of ram (4x2GB)
500GB SATA
DVD writer SATA
Nvidia 9400GT
The person who wanted this is installing XP 32bit. I already know 32bit will not see beyond 4GB but that is not the point.
The problem I'm having with the system is it would freeze at different times.
Out of the multiple times I've tried to install XP, only twice where I managed to successfully install it.
During the 2 successful installs the problem came back again during driver installation, which made me did a reformat and the 2nd successful install (also a force reformat) was right after the desktop loads for the firs time, a message appears saying "Windows has recovered from a serious error".
Another method I've tried was to use 4GB (2x2GB), and somehow it went smoothly even during the driver install, but as I'm installing the software like Nero and so on...BAM! BSOD, memory dump blah blah blah.
I've already update the motherboard bios to its latest stable version.
Check online for any solutions, found 2 that I've tried and does not work.
One was, these boards cannot have all their memory populated or else it will not work.
Another was to disable a CPU feature called C1E.
I have also tried installing XP 64bit and Vista 64bit (thinking maybe XP 32bit does have install problem with 8GB of ram), but still the same thing and Vista 64bit was much worse (the system froze when the Vista disc was booting up).
One last method I've tried was...
Used another P5Q series board and the problem still exist, but installing XP with the ram individually does not cause any freezing or BSOD during the driver installation.
The odd part is when I took the same 4 piece of ram and install it to a Asus board based on the Intel X48 chipset, (install XP 32bit) all went well. No freezing, bsod or other nonsense. Everything is working fine.
Please help, all answers are greatly appreciated!
Summary:
-Install 8GB of ram (4x2GB) on a Asus board based on the Intel P45 chipset.
-XP 32bit fails to install successfully for most of the time, only twice was successful.
-For the 2 successful installs, one was force to reformat due to freezing when installing drivers. Another was system has recovered from a serious error when Windows starts up for the very first time.
-Tried installing XP and Vista both 64bit version and was not successful.
-Removed 2 stick of ram leaving only 4GB (2x2GB) in the system, installed XP 32bit and it's still the same thing. Swap for the other two and problem still exist.
-Update the motherboard bios and it does not help.
-Did a clean install of XP 32bit for every individual ram and problem does not occur at all.
-Took another Asus P5Q series board this time based on the Intel P43 chipset and it's the same thing.
-Took the same 4 sticks of ram, installed in on an Asus board based on the Intel X48 chipset and it does not freeze, drivers/softwares/windows updates all installs successfully without a any sort of freezing or BSOD displaying memory dumps.
Note: The system is at its stock speed, no overclocking was done.
All bios are at their factory default settings.

If I take a single stick and did the same routine as I've done before, it works fine.
Did this for each individual sticks I have and individually will not freeze or cause a bsod.
Tested the 4 sticks of ram on 2 Asus P5Q series boards (one is based on the Intel P43 chipset and the other based on Intel P45) in memory configurations of 4GB (2x2GB), 6GB (3x2GB) and 8GB (4x2GB)* in single and dual channel modes and all of these memory configurations will either freeze during OS installation (32bit and 64bit) or randomly cause a bsod while installing drivers or other necessary software.
Tested the same exact 4 sticks of ram on a Asus board based on the Intel X48 chipset in the same memory configurations installing both 32bit and 64bit OSes and it works fine. System does not freeze or cause any bsod, did a memtest on these guys and it passed with flying colors.
Again went online today to look for any other suggestions and it seems I'm not the only one who have this problem. One member on another forum has a Asus P5Q Deluxe and he is also having problems with his 8GB of ram but his problem is different then the one I'm having (system cannot booth with 8GB of ram, but using 6GB and it works great).
Did another suggestion I've found on the web and that is to manually set the ram timings/voltage in the bios. It also requires the NB voltage to be bumped a bit instead of using "Auto". Tried that and it does not help at all in fact it made it worse (can't boot into Windows even after changing the setting back) and was force to do a reinstall.
*8GB (4x2GB) can only run in dual channel mode.
Anyone here with a Asus P5Q series board and have successfully ran 8GB of ram without any issues?
