Code:
Microsoft Small Basic is a project that is aimed at making computer programming accessible to beginners. The project comprises a simple programming language that gathers inspiration from the original BASIC programming language; a modern and attractive programming environment; and rich, extensible libraries. Together they make programming fun for kids and adults alike.

Because MS is a software company. A significant portion of their expenditures are on paying programmers.

Making programming easier / lowering the barriers of entry leads to more programmers, meaning cheaper labor.

I remember playing with BASIC in my school computing class, we had a simple task of designing a maze and then guiding our square dot (edit: actually it was a triangle!) along the shortest path from entrance to exit. It was great fun and I think a good way to introduce programming.

Microsoft needs good programmers. If you hire inexperienced ones, they will write crappy code. Crappy code means more exploits.

This isn't true at all. Microsoft needs adequate programmers, who require very little training to create.

Microsoft has software architects, project leads, and researchers that they recruit from academia and other companies (Google et al.), but these skilled employees are a fraction of the actual developers.

Microsoft actually stole BASIC years ago and made VB (when they were Founded).

Memory isn't really a problem these days, so with the new technologies... I wish I was born about 10 years earlier. Sad
