I got a virus, from downloading a game, then running the keygen. As soon as i opened the keygen, bitdefender went crazy, saying that its stopped trojans and unwanted connections and such. So i restarted the computer, seeing if that would help, now explorer.exe wont even start no matter what i do. I managed to do a full system scan with bitdefender, which deleted a few items. Then i restarted again, this time with error messages popping up all over the place. So i decided to reformat, so i grab the XP disc, delete all my partitions then reformat and install XP. After that finished, i booted up, only to find that when i first started XP, it came up with 'WerFault.exe has stopped working'. I thought that was weird, cause its a fresh install, and shouldnt have any errors. I then reformatted again, but this time i used my vista disc. The exact same thing happened. All the themes for vista and XP are the basic windows 98 one, no sound works, and i cant connect to the internet. so now im stuck as to what i can do to try and completely wipe my harddrive of this re-occurring virus. A fresh install doesnt work, a custom install doesnt work, ive reformated at least 5 times, so im stuck. Has my current hard drive shit itself and do i need to buy a new one?

Standing on your hard drive may improve the situation.

That's kind of odd, but what you can do is instead of formatting with your windows disc, used the utility from your HDD manufacture.
Just go to WD's site download it.
It's called: Data LifeGuard Diagnostics.
Another method: Do a low level format.
Select your drive:

Since HDD's are quite cheap I suggest you to buy a new one.
If you don't have the money, then try doing what kls85 said.
