Well, it really depends, it's the ratio of seeders:leechers, seeders being the uploaders and leechers being the downloaders. A high number of seeders to leechers means faster download. 2:1 is better than 4:3, even though there are more seeders in the latter.
The best torrent client, in my opinion, is uTorrent. It's small, and very tweakable.

It depends on your connection speed as well as how fast the seeders and leechers are uploading.
If you haven't opened a port yet, that will increase your download/upload speed quite a bit. Make sure to cap your upload though.

How many seeds are on the torrent? The higher the ratio of seeds to leeches, the better your speed will be.

I think you got a little confused.
Not having ports open will make you unable to receive incoming connections. It'll hamper download speed overall.
Capping upload on some torrent clients (Vuze, uTorrent) will cause your download to be silently capped (without you knowing). I do cap it, but at 1/15th my down bandwidth. That way I slide easily.

it's possible to complete files without ever connecting to a seed.
the numbers don't matter as much as the speed of which you're getting sent shit. obviously more people / the ratio of seeders vs leechers can skew it, but nothing is stopping you from getting amazing speeds off a tiny ass torrent with a few people because some guy there has a monstrous pipe.

Perhaps stop and then start the torrent again (so it might connect to faster or more seeders/leechers to dowload quicker).
Put a cap of about 5 or 10kb on your upload while downloading.
Some torrent programs look at how much you upload and then lock your download to that.
Try to use multiple torrent programs on the same torrent at the same path and file at the same time, sometimes they will co-op and it will download alot quicker.
Dont use the internet for other things, leave your computer on at night (most American seeders/leechers are on then).
And sometimes dont use your computer at all, just let it download and leave it on with nothing else then the download (perhaps your system cant handle several tasks at a time).
