Well im building a computer and im having trouble with the proccesor picking now before u recommend things, please not im on a tight budget so that means no i7's or extreme's. So right now i have my eyes on the e8400 from intel, but its only dual core but it gives good performance, now people have been saying that if u get a quad core, it future proofs ure system, but im not going to upgrade for like another 2-5 years so whatever i have should be good but not the best because i dont have $30k sitting on the table for luxurys like that, but since i am building a gaming computer that includes playing UT3 and GTA4 along with games like AOE3 and Spore, Simcity 4, simcity societies, L4D, Halo CE, Halo2, COD4, CODWAW, crysis, maybe some video editing, multi tasking, videos, burning dvd's and cd's and maybe GOW and Mirror's edge. so once again im on a tight budget but there is a good quad core proccesor from AMD that operaties at 2.8ghz

Get a quad-core. Many apps are multi-threaded now. Q6600 = $190. OC it to 3.4 GHz and it's killer.

For multimedia use it's better off you go with a quad.

I guess you want the E8400 even though it's a dual core is it's frequency at 3GHz.

Since budget is not a concern then

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 @3GHz/1333FSB/12MB L2----- $340

As long as you don't raise the voltage ridiculously high, you won't shorten your CPU's lifespan by much, if at all. I have my Q6600 running at 3GHz under the stock voltage, and it's 100% stable.

Q9550 - better and cheaper than the Q9450

By play I meant actually play, not run, lol.

30 FPS (i think that's the maximum?) on L4D maxed

Oh, and that's with a radeon hd4850 card

You can overclock without changing the voltages, and that won't decrease the life of your processor. Enough of this, "overclocking is the devil" nonsense.
Moving on, haven't you made a ton of parts threads already? o-o

Your only going to lose like a half month.
Which means like 0.5% of the life time or so.

And even that barely matters, since each chip is not identical to the next.
