You mean run a VMachine on an external HDD?
All you have to do is, when making a new VM, have it save to the drive you want instead of the local partition.

Seeing as it is an external drive, you could also install an operating system on it

You could just create a new partition and install your OS on the new partition.

He's talking about VMWare.
@OP. When you make a virtual machine, it's a single file. Saving it to an external HDD shouldn't present any problem so long as there's enough space on the disk.

How do i install Windows 7 on it.
And when i turn on PC there is an option to boot Windows 7 or Window Vista?

Well, it's not worth it to install and run a main OS from a HDD, unless you're using a faster cable, like eSATA.
You won't get the bootloader screen because that's for when there are more than one operating system on one hard drive. To boot from one or the other, you have to put the one you want to boot from at a higher priority to boot in BIOS.

I don't have much experience multi-booting [other than using Bootmagic and etc] but I have Unix systems installed on a slave while my XP is installed on my main, using GRUB bootloader. Don't know if its any different for Microsoft and Vista's bootloader.

As far as I had thought, the MBR made by Windows is different in that aspect, although I wouldn't mind confirmation or info on this. A third-party bootloader could be used, I don't know much about them, though.
