Good Morning Teachers and students. Today I will be talking to you about Marcus Tulius Cicero. Cicero was born in 107 BC and died in 43 BC. He had many different talents like all other writers. He was a Roman statesman, lawyer, political theorist, philosopher, and Roman constitutionalist. He was also considered one of the best speakers of his time, the Roman Empire.


He introduced the Romans to the chief schools of Greek philosophy and created a Latin philosophical vocabulary. Today, he is appreciated mostly for his humanism and philosophical and political writings. Atticus remarked that Cicero's letters to him contained such a wealth of detail that their leader had little need for a history of the period. This meaning that in a little letter, he shows how great his ability of speech and show his opinion in the way of their governing.


Cicero was born in a place 100 miles south of Rome making him not roman and traditionally Greek. During this period in Roman history, if one was to be considered "cultured", it was necessary to be able to speak both Latin and Greek. Cicero, like most of his peers, was educated in the teachings of the ancient Greek speakers, since the most outstanding teachers of oratory of the time were Greek. The ways that he was taught came effectively up into future uses for the political life he is ended up in.


Cicero started his career as a lawyer around 83-81 BC. His first major case of which a written record is still extant was his 80 BC defence of Sextus Roscius on the charge of a murder of his relative. After the case, In 79 BC, Cicero left for Greece, Asia Minor and Rhodes Cicero travelled to Athens, where he again met Atticus, who had become an honorary citizen of Athens. Cicero served as quaestor in western Sicily in 75 BC and demonstrated honesty and integrity in his dealings with the inhabitants. As a result, the people in Sicily asked Cicero to prosecute Gaius Verres, a governor of Sicily, who had badly pillaged Sicily. His prosecution of Gaius Verres was a great forensic success for Cicero. Upon the conclusion of this case, Cicero came to be considered the greatest orator in Rome.

Cicero was born into the Roman Republic. It is controlled by a republican form of government; a period which began with the overthrow of the Roman monarchy around the 510th BC. Its territory expanded during this period, from central Italy to the entire Mediterranean world. Rome expanded to the point of dominating Italy, North Africa, Spain, Greece, and what is now southern France. By this point, however, its republican form of government has been pressurized under the weight of imperialism which started the Roman Empire.
