Hey guys Smile After sitting down all weekend and thinking I've decided to pursue one of the many things on my list of what to accomplish before I die. I want to create my own game Rolling Eyes Naturally, I'd be looking at a _LONG_ term project where I'd have to learn a whole programming language from scratch. So, what I'm asking you is which programming language is best suited for creating games? I've tried asking all my programmer friends but their views are all biased depending on which language they all already know. I personally aren't that familiar with programming but ready to commit. I guess java is my strongest language (however still weak!) but I also know basic cpp & vb.

I'm thinking cpp would be the best for a windows based game but wouldn't it be better choosing java for the ability to run multi-platform?

Thanks in advance ...

I've also started on a project like this, but chose C# (Due to the fact that I already know this language). But since you probably don't know C# already, I'm going to suggest Action script. I would imagine that this would be pretty simple to learn, due to it's syntax. I think you would have to turn to warez to get a good IDE though, because of the extremely high prices on Adobes products($700 for the flash envirnoment I think).

C# XNA Studio for making games on your own, C++ for having large projects with hired staff coding for you, under a mmorpg or larger game title.

damn straight!

ugh on the serious side:

i also tried to make a game at spare time out of C\C++ along with OpenGL libraries.... well (i kinda planned for some a little too big to handle =/ ) i failed/gave up(and realized its kinda pointless, but i got far enough to be somewhat pleased with it...).

aside from that.... i did make two games out of Java for my projects at school and they were kinda easy to make(prolly cuz i knew the langauge...)....

theres also flash+actionscripting, a friend of mine makes flash games that get put up on newgrounds front page (and he wins contests and shit on armored games) =/ ... action-scripting seems easy....

>.> so i recommend (but its realy up to you... since other recommend C# which is not even on my list... just pick something learn it stick to it... and dont give up =P):
C\C++ along with either Direct-X or OpenGL library ....
Java
or Flash+Actionscript

>.> and try not to to take on a task you cant handle...

zDaniel365z make your avatar smaller if you don' want to get warned.

in topic:

if your making games by yourself or with couple of your friends i suggest C# with XNA game studio. It is very easy to learn and make games with it and it has very friendly and large community. There are also alot tuorials for it and you can make games for Xbox 360 with it.

Java or ActionScript might be good choice too but i don't really know much about them so i can't say anything.

if you are planning to make large MMORPG or something like that with 20+ people in your team and ready to learn ALOT then choose C++.

I tried C++ with OpenGL but i changed to C# becouse it is easier to make little jump game with it.

So basically C++ is a great language but if you want to make little games in couple of weeks then choose C# with XNA game studio IMO, but you MUST choose yourself what is best for you.

for XNA take a look here: http://creators.xna.com/en-US/

Also take a look here: www.GameDev.net

Yeah... Thanks for that =_="...

@ssaccount
Sounds good, but I'm looking for something REALLY long-term. Like something to keep me occupied for a good 2-3 years. Basically, I can't commit to anything in any aspect of life so I've decided to try to change that as that's one of the few things I feel very displeased about. I want to try doing this by making a game as it would also complete something I've wanted to accomplish for quite some time as well as help me out grade-wise as next year I'm going to take away some classes I'd anyways flunk in and replace them with a programming language. Hopefully by than I'll know more than enough in the language I choose to pass painlessly.

@GMZorita
he said he wants to do something long/hard that would take 2-3years so GameMaker wouldnt work...

your assembly idea is better then the gamemaker one ... make it out of assembly would take some time... xD

@nevereon
Well... if you want 2-3years worth of work then i gues try C\C++ along with OpenGL, make the game 3D, make it RPG, then make it be able to go online... and yeah next step MMORPG (make a website for it... design some system to suck up cash)!...

but seriously though... trying to make something extremely big could potientaly lead to to dissapointment (not stopping you, just be warned...)... =P
(kinda obvious but...Smile
also... no matter which langauge you choose to first start off with... you WILL have times were it will be pain in the ass... plus once you learn one langauge it will be easier for you to learn other languages... and finaly no matter which langauge you choose, none of them were strictly made for making games and games only, thus each and everyone of the langauges will have twists and turns of its own that may or maynot seem as painfull and anouying as in the other languages.

=P in the end the more time you spend thinking of which langauge you will use, the more time you waste, if you jump in and start using a language and dont seem to like it , then switch (some of your knowledge will be carried over...)

ya what's the problem? Back 20 years ago when my dad was working with computer and computer languages, he had a nice rca cosmac vip chip 8 computer.

Boy, it was the latest thing in gaming, as it had 2,048 bytes of RAM, a tv output, casset recording, and a 16 button keyboard. (0-9,a-f).

And the best part was, you can program in HEX! Now those space invader games can be written easily.

Seriously, this is what computer programming was like. So don't call him an idiot.

I know it isn't. That's why I'm looking at a really longterm project. I'm not trying gamemaker =_=" Really, I thought people would be more supportive that someone had ambitions for once. Guess this forum really does suck.
