get the base i7 920 cpu, excellent value and fast, but for graphics since your budget is like 1000-1200, get the ATI radeon hd4850, whoever said 4870, i think their like 250 or like 300 which is already a fourth of your 1200 budget.. Even better, i heard the Radeon HD4670 is only 80 bucks and can run games pretty well, but i would stick with the 4850 if your a DX10 gamer.

If he'd go with an i7 processor, he will also need to buy a more expensive mobo

And more expensive ram, i7 is ddr3 only also he would need to get 3 ram
sticks, because it 3channeled.

Thanks for the reply guys, although now you have me considering the q6600. I know nothing about overclocking, and it sounds risky. Should I just stick with the q9550?

no. get the fuxing q6600 with a tight liquid cooling system. keep a stack of napkins or towels next to it.

If he can afford q9550 it's alot better.
Liquid systems are loud and big.

get a crossfire mobo. the p45 will allow you to run multiple gpu's in the future.
that one allows for an nvidia card sli setup like 2 9800's.

There will not be support for sli on the p45.
Tho its a very good crossfire board.
