4gb is the limit to how much memory is accessible under 32 bit.
Obviously all your memory has to be mapped somewhere, such as video ram, etc.
It may also partially depend in some cases on how your motherboard decides to remap the memory. |
So say you have 4 GB RAM with Vista 32-bit. It states that you are using only 3.3 GB out of the 4 GB. So the .7 GB would be remapped into other components such as the Video Ram? |
Everything else is probably minuscule compared to your video ram, but yes room needs to be made for the other shit to be mapped into that 4gb space. So, it can vary depending on that among other things, it's not like it's always going to be .75gb missing.

Who ever you heard that from obviously did not explain enough as to why they said programs do not support dual cores.
In order to take advantage of a dual core, quad core, or multi-core cpu the application has to be multi-threaded. When a program isn't multi-threaded it will not take advantage of the 2nd core, but this does not mean you cannot run that program on a dual core cpu.
Dual cores let you multi-task and what that means is you can open up multiple programs at the same time and still finish in half the time as a single core.
So you got a single core at 3GHz and dual core at 1.8GHz
and your running 3 programs:
-video encoding
-compressing multiple files to winrar
-ripping music through itunes.
On a single core, since it's only able to handle one thread at a time
the program has to wait until one of them finishes before the other can start or to fully utilize that cpu.
Dual cores on the other hand, Windows can assign which core the program will run on and thus reducing the time for the task to complete.
Therefore when your single core is just video encoding, a dual core
has already started working on video encoding and compressing multiple files to winrar.
Here you see a program called Cinebench a multi-threaded benchmarking tool that can show the difference when using a single thread as compared to 4 threads.

With that out of the way, if you still want a single core laptop, you can go with the AMD Sempron, Intel Celeron M, or Intel Atom.
Another way is for some laptops their bios lets you disable the 2nd core.
If that is not available you can add the force command line to your XP start up (located in boot.ini) to tell how many cores you want to use.

| this one has the best CPU and possibly the best GPU. I couldn't find a benchmark for the graphics card but i think it's pretty good.

GTA SA requires a card with DX9 capabilities starting with the GeForce 4.
Playing with that card on a resolution of 1600x1200 with everything set to high just won't cut it as the card is too weak, even though it meets the recommend requirements.
For the laptop go with at least a mobile 9600GT or better off a 9800.

From the notebook you picked, go with the 8600m GT.
After doing some sniffing work, the 2 that came out on tops is the
9600m GS and 8600m GT.
The 9600m GS has the following:
Core: 430MHz
RAM: 800MHz
Interface: 128bits
8600m GT
Core: 475MHz
RAM: 700MHz
Interface: 128bits
If Nvidia uses their naming suffix the way they used it like their desktops then GS uses DDR2 while GT uses GDDR3. Unless you go with tier 1 where they all use GDDR3 no matter what the suffix is.
Running FEAR at 1024x768 with max settings:
9600m GS: min: 28FPS, avg: 28FPS, max: 28FPS
8600m GT: min: 13FPS, avg: 32FPS, max: 73FPS
As for a better understanding of what I've posted before...
As your resolution increases the game requires more from your graphic card and if your card is too weak to handle the load your frame rate drops.
Take the game GTA SA for example
The recommended video card to play begins with a GeForce 4, but did they tell you at what resolution can this card be played on and what setting they have?
Hey if the have everything set to low and was running it at 640x480 then of course it can play, but what about if they set everything to the max and ran it at 1600x1200 will the card still be able to perform like it was with the setting they had before?
Will the game be playable at 1024x768, 1280x1024, 1600x1200, 1900x1200 and 2560x1600?
This is why before getting any type of graphic cards, jot down a list of games you want to play now and a few months later on. After that is look at cards that falls into your budget, set the resolution you would like to play at, and a desired FPS, after that it's research, research, research!

The ones I've listed got gpus belonging to tier 1 level, but that's way over your budget so from the list of notebooks you picked out.
I went with the 8600M GT since it's got better performance than a
9600M GS.
