I'm pretty sure you can't. Then again, I don't know.
A feature of manual disk management is where your iPod does not automatically "sync" with your library and you manually drag and drog files into your ipod to "sync".
Most, if not all the people I know, have it like that.
To do it, click your ipod in your itunes window.
On the bottom will be like 3 checkboxes.
