Hi,

I just started to learn about unpacking and I already unpacked some packers with the help of Lena151's help, from tuts4you, and I unpacked some stuff by myself, but it wasn't protected, just packed to reduce size...

So I'm now trying to unpack ASProtect 1.2 and having troubles with the IAT.
It doesn't look like it redirect the APIs, looks like it changed the whole IAT to another function. (that push <API Address> and ret)

I wonder if there's an easy way of fixing the IAT, I made a little program that fixes it automatically, not perfect though (luckly it fixed all except of 1, which I fixed manually), is there a good tool for fixing the IAT or I have to fix it manually/code something to do it automatically?

Also after I fixed the IAT the program always crashed (too many exceptions...), not sure if I did anything wrong, maybe the IAT wasn't fully fixed, I don't know...

By the way, ASProtect version 1.3 and later found a way around the method of setting a breakpoint when ESP changes? Sad
Then I guess I have to step into/over a lot, don't I? Surprised
I tried animating until "push ebp" (usually blocks of code start with push ebp), but it just looped hudreds of times in the same spot, no success finding OEP. Sad

First of all, thanks for your answer. Very Happy
I made my own tool to fix the IAT manually, but its not very advanced, haha. Razz
Atleast it's working better than I expected.

As for the push ebp, I know that, appearntly not every function starts with push ebp. Neutral
And I know it's not related to the OEP, its just that I didn't see that the packer pushed ebp anywhere, so I assumed the first time I'd see push ebp would be at the entry point. Smile

Well, for the ESP change, I set hardware breakpoint on access and it still got around it without breaking. Rolling Eyes

And yeah, I tried unpacking an old client of MapleStory (Ahh, forgot the name, wasn't themida though) and it looks impossible to me. Sad
I guess I could search for SunBeam's topic about unpacking MapleStory and check the script, see how it works.

I guess I'll just try doing it all over again, see if I did anything wrong.

Thanks again. Razz

Edit 10000000:
I managed to unpack, I just figured out that it doesn't fix the IAT if some pointers are unresolved, not sure if it should fix and its just a bug or it just doesn't fix if there are unresolved pointers, but I somehow found out that it was GetProcAddress, so I fixed it manually and it worked!

Now I tried ASProtect 1.32, it says there are no unresolved pointers but still doesn't say "Congratulations, bla bla bla, will it work?" Sad
And it really doesn't work, even though it says there are no unresolved pointers, it still says there are invalid. (when I click "show invalid" it highlight some of the pointers, even those that points to an API and not the the packer's code)

ImpRec should (and always has for me) fix all imports if you play with the settings and use the different functions. Also, the plugins for ImpRec help a lot.

i have no idea what/why you are getting the errors if you fixed the imports correctly. Posting the target will help a lot.

and do i need to say this....have you studied ASPR tutorials ?, ASPR is a professional protection and thinking if you unpacked some of the piss easy packers like upx,fsg...you can unpack aspr aswell, nah. Lena's tutorials are in no way meant to teach you unpacking aspr, they just give you the general concept of stuff.

I know, I just unpacked 2 packers using this tutorial, but like you said, it was meant to teach the basics of unpacking. Razz

I downloaded some UnpackMe's from tuts4you.com, mostly ASProtect, there were many diffrent UnpackMe's, no protection, checksum, anti-debug, emulate system functions, protect OEP, all together and some more, I couldn't unpack most of these, only not protected and the checksum unpack me's. Rolling Eyes

Any anti-anti-debugging tutorials? Smile

Edit: I tried the Advanced Import Protection UnpackMe, there's some pointer I can't find out which API it should point to, when I try to delete it or just leave it as it is I get an error that an address could not be written, so I guess I gotta fix that import, but I have no idea how.
I tried tracing some call to the packer's code which lead me to MessageBoxA, so I guess this isn't related to that packer code.

Any idea how I can find with API it should point to?

Edit again..:
I tried setting a breakpoint, finding out what accesses that address, appearntly its used before the code reachs the OEP... could this be something like GetProcAddress or GetModuleHandle or anything alike that the packer added some useless code to confuse us and prevent us from unpacking?

I just thought I should add that there are a few plugins that every unpacker should have in their arsenal.

1) Phant0m 1.3 (Freezes my computer every so often...)
2) Olly Advanced (Great)
3) ODbgScript (Olly Script)
4) AnalyzeThis (Just handy)

STFU the shit about plugins mate, he clearly doesn't want to know which plugins are great and which not. Besides you are also way offtopic, i haven't seen you post anything ontopic yet. So Wicc, why not react ? :P

First of all, Wicc doesn't moderate this section.

Second, Flyte was just throwing some suggestions towards Symbol, to make his life a little easier. Yes, Symbol has been talking about doing it all manually, but usually, it's easiest just to use other tools. Also, Flyte wasn't telling Symbol "which plugins are great and which not", he was throwing some suggestions for some good plugins to help an unpacker.

First of all, did i ask you to clarify what Flyte said or meant ?.

Well wicc is the global mod or maybe not but he certainly moderate these sections. And i was sarcastic in my comment cause Wicc like he said himself he is biased. He usually takes the decision against his friends than the opposite party from what i have observed, to be on safer side i guess(avoid criticism). Anyway its not about Wicc.

i can READ!, i know what Flyte said. His comments were just useless imo cause Symbol didn't had any problems with being detected, having weird exceptions, running scripts or analyzing data sections. He was having problems unpacking and fixing imports and his comments didn't help at all. Well if i was in position of Symbol, i would have completely ignored Flyte which he did, do you see any response of Symbol appreciating his post ?. NO

So stop taking parties, help the guy, if you can't, you are better off being STFU'ed and sitting in that corner.

Sigh... You are really obnoxious.

Although you might not have asked, it seemed like you were misinterpreting what he was trying to do (help Symbol).

Ok, you think that they're useless. So? No one gives a damn. Symbol could find them useful in the future, when he tries to unpack different things. Also note how Flyte suggested ImpRec earlier on in the thread; that's probably going to help out Symbol, since, as you said, he was having issues with the imports.

Besides, Symbol's still on the topic of unpacking, and Flyte suggested some handy tools. If I were in Symbol's position, I would have downloaded each of those tools that Flyte suggested, or at least checked out some reviews (though it doesn't really seem necessary, Flyte seems quite knowledgeable about it), so that I would have those if I ever needed them.

I'm not taking parties, all I'm doing is sticking up for someone who has proved himself worthy of respect that you decided to shoot down for trying to help.

Whether or not Symbol chooses to accept Flyte's help is his business, not yours, and you have no right to tell him if he was helpful or not.

I made that post before it was moved from the Crackme's section to the General Programming section.

Wiccaan does not moderate the Crackme's section.

Ok going to jump in here and give everyone a verbal warning. Keep this on topic. Someone posted some suggestions for stuff to help, thats not going off topic, that is adding onto the subject at hand. No need to throw words at each other because someone else suggests something.

Get back onto the subject, keep it clean, or warnings will be issued and the topic will be locked.

No, all Flyte was trying to do was getting involved in the topic some way and he did it quite smartly. Posting about plugins and tools which if Symbol is serious about unpacking, should already have them. Its like telling somebody "Hey, Get OllyDbg, its fuckin great for debugging" while the guy is having problems reversing an algorithm, ofcourse fuckhead...he knows about olly and is using it.

Your post shows your complete lack of knowledge about the subject, Imprec and all the plugins he posted doesn't fuckin help you in resolving the Import protection. Hell there are no plugins for Imprec that resolves it auto for you so i dont get how the fuck Flyte posts helped him. I really suggest Googling those tools and learning what they do, they in no way have to do anything with Import Fixation.

Well i dont care what Flyte has proved himself but you have proved yourself to be an asshole of Flyte, now i can understand why you are defending him so much.

And whether or not, Flyte offends by my posts, its not your business, well maybe it is arsehole.

Heh seems my decision to join this forum was a bad one, but meh we all take wrong decisions. I am leaving forever this stupid shitheads filled place. have fun sucking eachother ducks.

PS: i edited my posts, now lets see if Flyte with all his mighty knowledge of plugins and fasm can help him. Feel free to edit my posts Wicc, i am leaving anyway.

ohh and thanks for derep heh, like i fuckin care Razz.

I can unpack Themida, along with multiple other protections. Still think I don't know what I am doing?

Good riddance, we won't miss you. Smile
