I believe the new 4870s are a bit under $300. Too lazy to go check.

I agree with slovach, the HD4850 is better than the 9800GTX. Considering your budget of up to $300, you might want to look at the HD4870 and the GTX 260 (although the latter is a bit slower).

For the ultimate price vs. performance, the GeForce 8800-series is still on top. Without going to SLI, you can get an 8800GT for $120 (after MIR), or an 8800GS for $80/9600GSO for as low as $85.

Using this review, the PowerColor HD4850 is on average 1.13 times faster than the ASUS 8800GT (Crysis, Call of Duty 4, World in Conflict, 3DMark06). If you do the math, in order for the HD4850 to achieve the best price vs. performance, it would have to be priced at $135 or less. The 8800GS/9600GSO (the 9600GSO is a re-release of the 8800GS) is about 10% slower than the 8800GT. In order for the HD4850 to be competitively priced, it would have to be at $100 or less.

If you have an SLI motherboard, I highly recommend that you SLI 2 8800GTs or 8800GS graphics cards. Under SLI, they beat both the HD4850 and the HD4870, and even surpasses the GTX 280 in most cases (as proven by this review).

Conclusion
The best possible configuration for price vs. performance is the 8800GS single or dual (through SLI), and slightly behind it, the 8800GT. I would recommend the 8800GT/8800GS if you are a price vs. performance person or have an SLI motherboard. If you can only run single card solutions, with $300, the best choice would be the HD4870.

EDIT: LOL, I guess we all forgot to ask for the interface (PCI, AGP, or PCI-e).

EDIT 2: For stores, online seems like the best for video cards (Newegg, Buy.com/Amazon.com with Google checkout and other deals), though for RAM, you might want to look at Frys (almost always crappy deals on graphics cards). Occasionally, other retailers (Best Buy, Circuit City) have good deals, so check there too.

EDIT 3: I've found a 4850 for $135 (finally, a half-acceptable price) - Sapphire ATI Radeon HD4850
