I'm trying to get someone's public IP through winsock or through anything but I can't. I got one, but it just gives me the private IP. I also want to list the name of each computer on a network but I can't find anything for that either.

I dont know how using that method, but, if you have them on aim it should be quite easy if you can get them to accept a file. Once the file transfer is active, check your active ports and look at the one designated for AIM and it will show you their IP next to it.

I'm trying to make an instant messenger, and what I'm going to do is first register their main IP (the computer they registered on) in my server (my computer), and then whenever they log-in I'm going to have current IP which is the IP their using right now, and I forward the messages to them through that IP. But unless the two clients are on a network with each other my method won't work. So I need to get their public IP.

Have them connect to IPchicken.com or something and get the data it sends back. Or write a little webpage you can connect to that send them their IP.

| Isnt it possible to create a C++ (or whatever language you are using) program, that will get the IP that you need, and then send the IP to your server? |

would gethostname-gethostbyname work if you're behind a router?
If you connect to a site that gives you your IP, you wouldn't need to parse it. You'd receive it all in text, then, since the IP would change every time, you could search for a unique string that preceeds the IP. In the case of ipchicken,

@gethosname-gethostbyname, no it doesn't work unless your just using a modem with no router.
How do I download the homepage html file at ipchicken.com (I could open it up and see the text)?

ugh... Here. I think thats what you want. And to parse html/xml, just treat it like a .txt file. Then search for what you want. You might be able to open just like any other file.

Try "GET / HTTP/1.1\r\n".
Also try connecting to google or something to make suure the code works.
