If your computer was overheating, your CPU would try to cool itself by slowing down. But eventually, the computer would shut down. I doubt it's a problem with the temperature.

"Lots of things" puts stress on your GPU and CPU. Mainly, it's your GPU that can't process all the objects and characters fast enough for smooth gameplay.

A powerful 8800GT costs less than a $100 these days. But your CPU would be a bottleneck. An 8600GT or 9600GT should be more than enough.

If you have 60$ or so laying around you could upgrade to a 8600GT (found one for 60$), 8500GT (found one for 48$ after MIR), or if you have some more $ a 8800 GS (found one fore 80$ after MIR).
All of those card would be at least 3 times faster than what you currently have.
You could for a cheaper card, an 8400GS which I found one for 30$ and that would be about twice as fast as what you currently have.

(Those guesses on how much faster the card would be is an estimate baised on their stats, I can't guarantee that they would be three or two times faster respectively, but I can guarantee that they will be faster and respond faster than what you currently have.)

For gaming, the one you have is extremely slow and near obsolete.

An 8600GT should play all of your games on high, but if you can invest a little more, then you should get the 8800GS, as it is 2x faster and overclocks very well on stock cooling (30%+ OC on the core, shaders, and RAM on the regular-clocked variant).

Most of the time for me was..

Overheating
Graphic settings.

I had AGP turned off which caused me 3-4sec lock ups every 3min.
