Im wondering, If RAM helps the computer run faster.
Im not talking about the internet speed or anything like that
Im talking about like, Does RAM Increase the computer speed so it could run without any kind of lag?
My computer has 384 mb of RAM
AMD 64 Athlon
I created a private maplestory server but im wondering. If I have over 1+ gb of RAM for my computer. Will it make it so the server wouldnt lag?
My computer information is
-eMachines
-T6412
-AMD Athlon (tm) 64 Processor 3400+
-2.19 GHz, 384 MB of RAM

Now a days the regular amount is 2 GB of RAM.
And yes, of course it affects computer speed.

Yes it makes computer speed faster, 384 mb of ram.. not good for hosting a private server
now a days people have 8gb of ram and they can yet only host 1100 people

| Yup dude RAM affects computer speed, especialy playing games. You shouldnt host a server with only 384mb of ram.. how old is ur computer? When u buy a new cpu it comes with atleast 1gm of ram.

It depends on the bottleneck.
Does your harddisk led burn a lot while hosting the server? If so, extra RAM will certainly work well
Else it could be that your 2400 bps modem might just not be fast enough and yuo need a better modem.
Or that due to crap programming the server you're running needs a faster cpu.
Also disabling some stuff like antiviruses can speed up a system a LOT. Same goes for firewalls

Dude it's a private server. Unless you only expect like 3 ppl playing on it, get a few gigs of RAM.

A system with a processor like yours, and 1000GB of RAM would still run slow, due to other core hardware holding it back.

It depends.
DDR2-6400,DDR2-1066,DDR3-1333,DDR3-1666...........
All this RAM will speed will speed up the system. But inter-graded Memory Controller will also speed up your system much better then the old FSB/ I/O system.
Example is AMD Hyper-Transporting.
If you want to have the best ram, you get a RD-RAM. It is super fast, faster then DDR2 but DDR3 soon catching up. But the price is very very expansive.
The amount of RAM is depend on how many program you are running also the page-file it use.
Also 32bit OS can only go up to 3.3GB-3.5GB (Windows XP and below),64bit OS can go up from 8-64GB(Windows Vista 64bit edition)
Not always high ram is good, but too much of it may end up wasted.
===============================================
Since you are using a 64bit processor, you should use a 64 bit OS to use the full power of the CPU. AMD Athlon64 should have Hyper-Transporting.
You just get up to 1-2GB DDR2-6400 or DDR2-800MHz(Hyper-RAM) and is good to run without any lag.

ur dad told you that ram doesnt affect computer speed? wtf! dont listen to him,
RAM is a big part of increasing the speed of an computer,
you should go get atleast 1.5GB ram coz getting 1GB ram is kinda useless
since u will be needing more in the near future to run games or programs

Yes: to poll question.
Possibly: To maple server question (depends on how many connect)

another thing that might help is kicking of family members that don't know how to configure their file sharing programs like torrents and are uploading with max speed possible.

The memory speeds don't really affect performance if the ratio to the CPU's clock speed is higher than 1:1.
Integrated memory controllers are make the processor more powerful compared to Intel's FSB. But either way, Intel is the way to go if you are getting a Core architecture and above (Pentium Dual Core, Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Quad, Core 2 Extreme). Anyways, with the next few Intel releases (specifically, Nehalem), they will host an integrated memory controller.
Currently, I would recommend that you not get a 64-bit operating system on that computer, as it would be too slow to utilize all the RAM, and of course, there are major compatibility problems.
Both your computer and your dad's computer have CPU's that really bottleneck your whole computer. I'd recommend upgrading most of the parts or buying a new computer.
