Safe mode doesn't magically remove the password.
You can however bypass it using one of several bootable utilities and remove the password direct from the security accounts manager.
Because windows isn't loaded in any form at that stage, no permissions/restrictions are applied. Yes the files are still protected by a simple encryption but you don't have the retrieved the password merely take it away |
Yes, he can "magically" remove/change the password in Safe Mode, since there's an administrator account only visible in Safe Mode.

wow no ever thought of deleting the SAM file located in C:\WINDOWS\system32\config
u can boot into DOS mode with a floopy or CD and enter this command
| Code: | | del C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\SAM |
the SAM file will be deleted and u can enter any accounts on that computer, if it still says to enter password then just press enter
P.S: that what i did to my school's non-network computer

Good god haxor5254, yes actuall I suggested about the SAM a page ago, lol!
If you read the posts you would see that.
And don't delete the whole SAM, jesus, you'll lose you're local accounts altogether, or worse messing like that.
Like I said before, there are bootable utilities, that will search for the accounts manager, pick the user you specify and clear the password.

Physch;
Easiest way is to
1) Boot into safemode and goto into the Administrative account
2) Burn a CD with a password clearer
3) DualBoot (make a new partition)

Dual boot like Windows XP Professional edition if he has home edition (only need at max 2gb) and he can then use "saminside" to get his password.
Please bitch i know what I am talking about.

Or just boot into safe mode with command prompt, log into "Administrator" (no password) and change the password. You don't need a second partion just to change your password.

[Psych] told me I didn't read the OP's post for saying the same thing.
