When taking a screenshot using the 'Print screen' button, it saves the screenshot as a .tmp file.. what format is this.. I mean I know tmp stands for temp -> temporary.
I noticed this when I took a screenshot and then ctrl + v'd it to my MSN Messenger window.
It sends a file (for example: f4hnjdb5.tmp
but messenger understands it is an image file)
So.. Anyone have any idea what format this is?
It's like making a batch file.
the extension is .bat, but in reality it's .txt.bat (not in all cases)
Oh, BTW it's better to ctrl + v it to messenger window, than to save it as a bmp or a jpg,
because the file is only about 200kb! (even on a resolution of 1400x900)

Thats because when you do Print Screen/SysRq, it saves the picture to your clipboard... Which is temp....
You have to take a picture
PASTE IT INTO PAINT
Save, send, ect...

Okay.
It has the quality of a png, but is slightly larger..
I tried saving the same screenshot in different formats
(with res 1440x900)
Here's the results:
.png - 132kb and no visual loss of quality
.jpg - 139kb and significant loss of quality
.bmp - 3,5mb and FULL QUALITY
.tif - 340kb and a slight loss of quality
.gif - 132kb and a HUUUUUGE loss of quality
I also tried sending the .tmp file to my friend.. messenger shows the size is 140kb. So .jpg is closest to that.
But it does not meet the same quality!
I think messenger has it's own jpg compressor built-in.
As mspaint has a very lousy one.

JPEG (jpg) has an non-linear transformation, the dynamic range of an 8-bit JPEG file is about 11 stops.
That causes huge quality loss with EVERY save.
Png however, has a non-patented lossless data compression method known as DEFLATE, which is the same algorithm used in the zlib compression library.
My point is, you should use only formats with only linear compression.

I know that, but this has gone WAAAAYYY off topic.
The question was, what format it is.
Not which compression method is the best.
And I think we concluded this already.

| Jpeg is the most flexible format, but if you use paint it sort of spoils the whole idea.

dude.. u think BMP can be 140kb?
It's actually 3,5mb..
HAHAHA.. with a resolution of 1440x900..
you are way off.
Tho, it can be it saves it as a .bmp.tmp
and that messenger really compresses it into a jpeg..

Wait, what? No, he never said that. He only told you what the print screen format is. Please, read who's posting before you go off flaming them.
