Hey, im reasonably new here so i'm not sure if i'm posting this in the right section or anything.. But i was wondering what linux everyone recommends? I was recently going to download one, but when I saw the vast amount of versions out there i got rather confused..
I just want it for a normal computer, with a little bit of hacking in there.
Anyone got any ideas?
And please don't pollute the thread with flames or crap. _________________

This is in the right forum.
But to help you out, it sounds like you don't need Linux at all.
Linux is pretty much an open source OS that lets you hack into your own computer and change it as you see fit, and from what I hear it's great for building windows applications.
I've never used it myself, but if you aren't a heavy scripter then you should be fine with XP. |

I lol'd. You only say that cause you know nothing about it probably.

For a normal system I would recommend:
Gentoo:

Ubuntu:
http://www.ubuntu.com/
For hacking, a lightweight alternative would be Knoppix which can be harddrive installed, or loaded from a CD:
http://www.knoppix.net/
For servers / development I personally use(d) Debian:

Your opinion is nothing more then that then. Don't discourage others from using something just because you gave up without attempting to put effort into using it. Linux is far better then Windows in my opinion the only reason it's not as main stream as Windows as it's not designed to be "user-friendly" like Windows point-and-click methods are. _________________

It is difficult to learn, that doesn't make it a bad OS, maybe a bad OS for you , but you can't say it's shit
For a beginner I recommend Ubuntu hands down, there's better ones out there but Ubuntu is a great starter OS. |

I would recommend Ubuntu since it supports a lot of hardware and is based on GNOME (smexyyyy).
Just d/l the image file and burn it onto a DVD then boot it. =D _________________
