So my old computer kept freezing up and being generally shitty, well it was an old P4 so I figured it was time to upgrade, so I got a new motherboard, CPU, and video card, thinking okay I have basically a whole new computer for the most part, that should do the trick...wrong. The RAM is good because I tested both sticks in memtest on both boards, both times it passed. I tried about 10 different sticks of RAM I had laying around, both in single and dual channel mode, same thing. Both my Linux and Windows partition do this, so I know it's not OS related. So I try a different video card, same result. I throw a different stick of RAM in the cache on my RAID controller, still crashes. CPU and northbridge temps are fine, I tried running my fans at max speed, still crash. The crashes are happening more and more frequently now, went from once a day or every other day to about 10+. It doesn't seem to care if the system is idle or load, it seems like it may happen maybe slightly more when it's loaded. The system doesn't return errors in Prime95. In the process of testing it, one of my hard drives died for absolutely no reason, luckily I had a spare laying around and switched the PCB, which fixed the issue, but now I voided the warranty on both drives so I'm still stuck with a dead drive. The only thing I can think of it being is the PSU, although all voltages are in check, and seemingly stable, who knows. I buy only the highest quality parts, and I never seem to get my money's worth.
So, when I purchased those new parts, I got a new keyboard and mouse, USB, it's been a while since I've used USB for either because I've always hated USB peripherals, but I figured hey maybe they've ironed out the bugs by now, wrong. About 10% of the time when I start up, the keyboard doesn't turn on, so I have to reach behind my tower and unplug it then plug it back in, which is annoying. Then, usually a couple times a day a button will "stick" and go crazy until you press it again (not physically stick, it just acts like it is.) A lot of times it's the ctrl or shift key, which makes programs do weird shit when you click or press a button, making you think the computer or program is going crazy, but it's really just the keyboard. The mouse was not a cheap one, and it likes to randomly just stop moving, resulting in having to disconnect and reconnect it, which is real fun to have happen in a shooter game. I've since gone back to my old school IBM keyboard that came with a computer I got when I was 5, and it still works flawlessly, as for the mouse I found a usb to ps/2 adapter that fixed the problem(somehow), so at least that works.
Now my sister's computer, when she's not loading it up with viruses that I'm expected to remove, the hard drive is dying on it, constantly. She got it last christmas, first hard drive died around May, second died just about a month ago, so I popped in a new drive and PSU, that drive already died like a week ago, and I'm too frustrated to even deal with it at this point.
Which brings me onto my next irritant, computer users. I've been a computer technician for quite a while, and a lot of times when a customer comes in and I'm trying to fix their computer, they breathe down my neck while I work on it, and have to ask "what's that?" "what are you doing now?" "you're not supposed to do that" "wait shouldn't you do this instead?" Okay, if you knew what you were doing, I wouldn't be here fixing your computer now would I? Let me do my job... The only appreciation I've gotten is people who come back to the store and compliment me on the neat wiring jobs(since most of the cases have windows), or that they like my case mods, otherwise they're complete assholes about everything. One time I had to deal with some guy who could barely speak English, had this old ass Compaq, we told him he'd be better off just buying a new machine than putting money in to upgrades, but he wouldn't have it. So I put in that new hard drive he wanted, and find out the machine won't start. I look it up, and find out for whatever reason Compaq put the BIOS on the hard drive. You read that right, the BIOS on the hard drive. The system was then all but useless because the old drive had already been formatted by another technician, and the guy threw a fit over it and threatened legal action. So we went to court, which cost far more in legal costs than that old p2 was worth, he lost the case of course, and still had the balls to come back bitching after all was said and done. We had to have the police escort him off the property, and luckily never heard from him after that.
I'm of course always expected to be 24/7 tech support for my family and basically anyone else who knows me, luckily at least most of my friends are good with computers and help me out with that most of the time, but they have people harassing them to fix their computers too. I really don't mind helping friends or family out when they have problems with their computers, but I'm not tech support, I don't have the time to fix computers constantly, and I don't expect pay for a once in a while thing, but it's several times a week, it gets old, especially when I don't get so much as a "thank you", and people get mad if I can't help them fix their computer at that exact moment, which results in me being harassed about it constantly. Could people be any more ungrateful? I do enjoy computers and helping people out, obviously that's why I'm in this section, but people don't seem to understand if I'm going to fix their computer for free, it will be when it's convenient for me, and I'd at least like some appreciation for it, even a simple "thank you", not for them to act like it's expected.
My grandma runs a small business, and since she's helped me with a lot throughout the years, I've had no issue helping her with her computer problems. Then her business started treating me like 24/7 tech support like everyone else, got angry when I couldn't fix things right away, told me I would recieve pay which was years ago and I still haven't seen, not that I even asked for it in the first place but I don't like being lied to, and the straw that broke the camel's back was when they started accusing me of being responsible for their computers breaking so often, accusing me of making them purchase parts and then taking them for myself, and insulting my intelligence if I didn't have an answer to their problems. It's true, I break your computers just so I get the joy of fixing them again and getting completely disrespected in the process, of course!
Then there's dial up users, even though there's DSL and cable here that's cheaper, more reliable, doesn't block your phone line, and is always connected, they refuse to give it up. I hate dealing with dial up connections and modems in general, it's just unnecessary. Then I have to order a modem which means having another computer sitting around for days, and an irritated customer who can't understand why I don't have one in stock, this isn't the 90's anymore, nobody should be using dial-up, so why should I have a modem?
Then we have Vista's release, and I know everyone can relate to being pissed off about that. Instantly I have about 10x more OS related things to fix for people, and I have to deal with customers ranting about how much they hate Vista, then why the fuck did you buy it? Newer does not equal better, and nobody bothers to read reviews so they could see, hey, everyone with computer knowledge hates it, even the dumbshit users who can barely figure out how to check their email can't stand it, so I guess I shouldn't buy it. Nope, it's got a flashy new interface so you must have it!
Holy fuck that was a long rant...
So in conclusion, I hate computers and everyone who uses them, and I'm not looking forward to starting my career in IT.

read it all... you should just charge, and if those people at your grandmothers business keep doing that just dont help them, you shouldnt feel obligated when they are being complete d-bags.
and with your sister, maybe just show her how to replace the harddrive, seems like she would get proper experience doing it herself so often
if she gets into it at all then she will become the tech with people in her household instead of you, eliminating a couple annoyances.

After their last little slew of accusations, I stopped helping my grandma's business with their shit.
I've taught my sister how to use a computer, she can use one pretty well, same with my mom, but neither of them know anything about the hardware, and my sister still likes to download whatever looks appealing without scanning for viruses or even using common sense. The last virus I removed was from a harry potter screensaver, when I asked why she even downloaded it when she shuts her computer off when she's not at it anyway, she had no answer.

Doesn't her virus protection stop it automatically?..

Not when she uninstalls her antivirus because it won't let her install the virus laced programs she wants. *shakes head*
I've helped my best friends become knowledgeable with computers, but then they started getting really into them, now they just have to deal with the same shit I do, and the cycle begins...
