the vista screensavers has a sort of "anti xp protection". running the .scr file on xp result in "this is not a valid win32 application", however, quick google search showed me that theres a way to patch the screensavers, removing this protection. some1 know how to do it?
PS: dont tell me to go download the screensavers instead of patching them. i dont need the screensavers, i just wanna learn how to do it.

I would just find out what it is using to run the screensaver, maybe it doesn't even check the operating system... But you would need to use a decompiler or a hex editor, if you need to edit the files.

an .scr file is a simple exe renamed to .scr. by checking screensaver download sites a found out it has something to do with the header. the same "not a win32 application" error comes when im running any other vista application on xp (moviemk.exe,iexplore.exe,notpad.exe...)
what im thinking is, that microsoft changed the address where APIs are, or they changed the way the header works. iunno.

You can pop one open in a debugger just rename it to .exe

Umm I dunno where you got that from haha01haha01, thats simply not the case.
Their structure has nothing of a PE-format...

@Labyrnth: i cant open them in olly even if i rename them to .exe, it says its not a win32 application so it cant be runned no matter what.
@[Psych]: it IS the case. screensavers are executables renamed to .scr, i saw the header, the MZ and PE sig, the dlls getting loaded, and i can open it with LordPE and see all the header. i can open it with ResHacker and see all the resources, etc.

ahh... Labyrnth... ur disappointing me
u opened an XP screen saver, that runs fine anyway.
im talking about Vista screensavers. the header in vista is messed up somehow, and therefore windows and olly dont recognize them as exe.

Do you know why they have that structure? No because you didn't look hard enough.
Those .scr files have a sort-off built-in stub installer, which enables them to register themselves when executed. That is the info you are getting most likely from the header.

i can get one, but its illegal to upload these so ill pm u if i get one.
@Psych: i know NOTHING about screensavers, except that they are executables renamed to scr. how could i "look hard enough", im telling u i couldnt even open it with olly. all i could look at is the header.
