Just finished a year of college with a 4.0 and going to be taking lin alg soon.. anybody know what major is most suitable for CE [dis]assembly-type nerds?
I'm not in it for the coding, but for the mechanical aspect of it. I'm sure 99% of you will get what I'm trying to ask here.
I've always relied on you guys for life solutions. So don't tell me that I should be making my own decisions now.

computer engineering
my computer science class about computer organization and architecture required some base knowledge of assembly but was mostly engineering based, no coding required.
im sure you could start off with a CS or CE and take extra classes from the major you don't pick to see the differences and decide then. if neither really seem to be what youre looking for, you could try mechanical or electrical engineering.
im CS and math major, im not strictly in it for the coding either, but for more theoretical aspects rather than applied, if you feel the same you could try double major too. there is a lot of overlap but also a lot of really good math classes that aren't required for CS (at my university at least, eg CS only major only need up to calc 2, not calc 3 or differential equations) that will give you an edge against normal CS major and will challenge you.

any advice for me, i'm doing pure theoretical computer science atm, i'm considering doing software development (more focused theory, more applied) or data science (stats, machine learning) instead. it's for my undergraduate.

from my own experience and perspective getting a job as a hardcore compiler programmer or scientific research developer. Since there is not really that much demand for it, but there is not really that much offer for it. If you are good, get a good resume and get the right contacts during your college years you might land something good.
Have in mind that I am in the business/web/mobile apps development industry and not in the scientific research biz.
AI and Machine learning is a buzz word right now and might land you something good, specially if you are familiar with the most popular engines like tensorflow since chances are that if you land a job that requires you doing machine learning you won't be going solo.
also it would be nice if you could add to your resume: git and scrum (scrum being a work methodology and not really related to computers)

i agree with gogo that ai and ML is buzz right now (deep learning too). if you wanna do that learn tensorflow now and jump in now, get ahead now because its trendy. I think it will last and that its not just ONLY a trend obviously, so you will have a future in it. i've also heard many times that git is very good to know (i was lucky enough to be introduced to it in my first computer science class from the lab instructor)
when it comes down to what you're deciding between Emil you really just gotta test the waters and see which you prefer/excites you more. just remember not to shut the other completely out once you decide on the one you like.
i cant really give you much advice beyond that vague life type advice, im currently in same boat as you as an undergrad, i just decided to pick up math to give me an edge. I will most likely go into ML as well, and am picking relevant math classes based on machine learning, but another important factor to consider is the school you're going to. as far as I am aware my school has a couple AI classes and some CS professor or something that is the head of ML for my uni. that means we're at least somewhat competent. if your school has no head of ML or anyone that knows anything about it, then you can't really expect to base your college path on something that your college does not have.
