I taught myself piano, been playing it for 5 or 6 years. However, I know my form is garbage. The only way you'll ever learn how to play properly is from a teacher.
You don't need to read sheet music to play piano. Sure, it helps, and allows you to play any song you could ever want, but it's not 100% nessecary. Anyone who tells you otherwise is just an elitist, and their opinion should be discarded. Learning sheet music is the hardest thing about music PERIOD. I spent 2 years learning music theory, and I'm in a band now. We don't use sheet music, the only thing I could say I utilized from that class is all the different types of scales out there and how to make interesting chord progressions.
Self teaching has always been my preferred method of learning anything. Some say it's easier, some say it's damn near impossible. Up to the individual.
Best thing I can offer you is to learn scales, chords within those scales, and how to invert chords and you'll have a lot of fun even as a beginner.

No need to break the piggy bank to start learning piano.
more keys is better, but it is also more expensive and for starters you won't be needing those extra keys.
here a good channel that can help you get started from the very basics

Pretty good catch.
It's been 10 years ago since I last attended piano lessons but I still remember the philosophy - pick a song. Learn right hand which is usually the melody, learn left hand which is the "low-end" and usually support.
Play 1-2 "rows" until you know it completely, then move on to 3-4, 5-6 etc and whne you know it all go for 1-6. Then combine and repeat the above mentioned concept. Buy a beginners book for piano that provides you with sheets.
It's a slow learn, but damn rewarding when you've practiced for a couple months and you understand which notes are connected and so on (scales etc) and how traditional songs usually follow a similiar pattern.
