I'm trying to find a good pointer for shield capacity in Borderlands 1. Here's what I'm doing:
1. Narrow down addresses with correct value
2. Grab address that truly affects shield capacity value (freezing = doesn't go down)
3. "Find what accesses this address" scan
4. Numerous opcodes here, go with the single one that increments by 1 every time I get shot (shot = taking damage = reduced shield capacity) Another seems to increment by 5 every time.
5. Copy offset value, copy hex address and search for it.
6. I've tried (a) The green addresses, (b) The top address, (c) The closest address to the original (current session) address.
7. Add pointer w/ offset. Has correct value, is modifiable and live.
At this point, I restart to see if it's persistent - but I haven't been able to find one that works after a restart. What am I doing wrong?
Edit: Found a great tutorial from Rydian for pointer scanning that helped me find a persistent pointer. Thanks for that, and thanks for keeping CE amazing DB.
Edit2: Alright, now I've gotten correct pointers for my shield capacity as well as ammo count in current clip (benefit is no reload) - but I'm having issues with total ammo (for infinite ammo). I've gone through the same process as the previous ones, but it seems freezing this pointer doesn't work. Interestingly, when I pause the game it visually changes to the frozen value, but when I start playing again it switches back to where it 'really' is.
What should I do in a situation like this? I've tried rescanning and not pausing the game while I do so, but that didn't change anything. Is this a situation where I need to create a short script, as a single value freezing isn't a viable solution? Or is that not the issue here?
Could I simply have the wrong value? I don't see how that could be possible as searching for the value of my total ammo results in only 2 addresses, both of which have this ineffective result. If I search for the ammo in my clip + the total ammo (technically my 'true' total) it doesn't scan out to any addresses, so I don't believe that's it either.
Edit3: Figured it out. They were storing the true value as a float. In hindsight that makes sense since the Eridium weapons are not integer-based ammo.
