^USSR Circa 1930-40

Totally okay, people smile see? Yup Yup Socialism works.... yup...

Paupav is right everyone... socialism works and even if there's food shortages, inability to pay for housing (homelessness is illegal therefore eviction was illegal), the actual "housing" being a literal room for a family, item shortages (aside from food due to top down structure), lack of medical availability (not because they cant afford it, which they couldnt, it was just not there because of the way socialism works)... yea socialism works well...

</sarcasm>

Socialism in the USSR removed extreme poverty, which I do think is true in the case of North Korea, but I cannot consider that a government mandate that everyone have a roof over their heads as a "fix" for the actual problems.

What I understand to be the effective fix that was implemented pushed all the citizens' quality of life to what the world deemed as a "poor" level, that removes extreme poverty.

Honestly 99% of the people arguing about how socialism is the way forward are people that are just unhappy with the way things are right now and confirmation bias has caused them to think the way they do. They aren't educated on the topic, and they refuse to be.

"Capitalism hasnt made /me/ rich, so we should do away with it" and "I was born, I already did my part, give me free stuff" -socialists, basically

That actually is what I basically hear when people on my university campus complain about capitalism...

there's plenty of opportunity to make a lot of money and live very well in a capitalist society. you just have to be smart and creative, or benefit from smart and creative people (eg inheriting money). there's nothing wrong with giving large incentives to smart and creative people. and for people that can't do anything original, there's also nothing wrong with playing your part as a cashier or average store worker, as long as you can make enough money to live decently and your freedom is not being oppressed.

peoples complaint about capitalism should really just stop at being against the super rich that aren't philanthropists. no one has a problem with bill gates making fucktons of money, because he gives back and seems like a nice guy. another complaint they should have is against consumerists and people that value objects, does having 5 super cars sitting in a garage really make the rich happy? yes, only because as a society we value objects so much. people that are anti-capitalist are just hypocrites, they too want these objects that the rich have.

I don't, but U Chicago, I know for sure has a large following for socialist ideals even within their highly regarded econ department... ive argued with some of my friends there and it really comes down to a preference-based explanation or something we have no counterfactual for

American Universities are generally more liberal and by extension their views a bit more socialist. Our generation (yours and mine at least, I dont know how old everyone else is) kind of expects to be hand fed everything. Most liberal arts and even some of STEM (in academia) believe in very socialist equity views . To be fair... I like hearing no one will go hungry... shit man I have a bit of a heart. I just know given constraints, this is just wishful thinking right now.
Not everyone understands that, though. They truly trust the government to be able to fix it if some policy was written to fix it. Most trained logicians know this not to be true, but we also know that most people aren't trained, logicians.

@Brolock, for sure, but I mean they probably don't realize that and or just want things given to them... yea... i kinda want things given to me too Sad
Free shit is best shit <.< >.> <.<
Those guys who complain about the 1% not giving back probably wouldnt even give back either if they were in the 1%'s shoes. They're really just envious of what others have and want everything to come easy.
