Any way to make the computer ask me whether I should allow a program/software to use internet if it wants to? I did some googling and people told me to get a firewall seperate from the windows one; I've done that but it doesn't really work that well (first it asked me every time, now it doesn't, so I have to keep switching it to ask me everytime); and I was hoping that'd be some native way to do it?
Any decent firewall program will initially ask you for individual program approval when it runs for the first time after firewall installation.
It will also provide you with option to revoke those accesses at a later time.
In addition, you can temporary change the program permission or security level so that none of the programs get permission or a select few gets the permission.
It all depends on which firewall program have you installed and where those options are.
A quick look in the help file and settings/ options will answer your questions. _________________
Personally I use windows default firewall in "Block all in/out traffic that I didn't explicitly allow", combined with windows firewall notifier 1.x ( http://wokhan.online.fr/progs.php?sec=WFN ) to get a popup each time a connection doesn't match a rule and add one if necessary. _________________

Always research the software that your computer is trying to download on your computer. Usually it will show the manufacturer. Copy and past that name into google to see if it's legit.
_________________
