|
|
Hi folks,
Can anyone explain to me why Blu-Ray media is still so expensive? As of today, blank discs cost about $10 (USD) each. The tech has been on the market almost ten years now, and aside from a basic scratch-resistant coating, I don't see any substantial differences in media versus DVD. Are there big licensing fees per-disc, or is the cost artificially inflated, or what? Is it likely that the cost of media will ever go down substantially?
Cheers,
JD

BluRay discs hold a lot more than DVDs, and BluRay is owned by one company (Sony) so they can mark up the prices because they have no competition.

Another reason is that less people buy bluray's. So less need to mass produce them.
Instead of going from DVD to BluRay, people went from DVD to Digital Distribution.

Bluray is dying so they're trying to milk as much money out of it as they before pulling the cord.
The very fact that they offer digital download options to some of the movies should hint that they're transitioning over.

You don't really need to buy those expensive single packed disks and get the doughnut-like packed cases. Blank BD-R DL (50GB) costs around 2.5$ per disk now and those BD-R 25GB ones are dirt cheap, you can find a lot of promotions for them.
I brought a 50Pack BD-R for 21$ with free shipping so that's 42 cents per disk.

Wow, those are good prices. I checked Newegg for prices before my first post, and I didn't see anything anywhere near those prices.

I used Newegg for the price too though, the 50GB ones are not up anymore it seems so looks like it's changing often.
The 25GB-50Pack was with some promotion code, they show up a lot in their emails(not always that high of a discount but yeah) so it's good to look through them and their site instead of buying them at their regular prices. This brand is good too so it's not like it's on sale a lot because it's crap, I'm on the 2nd pack from them and so far no disks failed while burning with ImgBurn.
