They have been occurring to me more and more often. Could there be a reason why? And is there a way to help reduce them?

Nightmares could be the bodies way of handling any number of things, most likely anxiety of some sort. Best you can do is not worry about them and just try to get some sleep.

you should probably try to relax before going to sleep ...perhaps some light music.
Also, if its the same nightmare there might be something that's worrying you

Don't watch scary movies before you go to bed.

Play Tetris. It really does help you know. I've been playing tetris for a while and it actually helps me forget about stuff and block nightmares with falling tetris blocks .

Or (which is a way better solution), watch scary movies before you go to bed and you will surely have nightmares about monsters, but not about your own personal problems.
I prefer a scary monster in my dream anytime instead of dreaming about life issues. (Like the "oh no, I have to work again" or "oh no, I will fail in school".)

There are a number of factors that contribute to nightmares, like:
Stress/Anxiety
Painful experience
Eating cheese before bed
Drinking/drugs

Basically if you just eat a lot before you go to bed, it is enough to have nightmares.

This actually works.
There are several theories as to why we dream ranging from repressions (Sexual or emotional. Put froward by freud) to just random neurons firing and your brain trying to make sense.
Reading is a pretty decent way to relax yourself before you go to sleep. I don't tend to remember my dreams but a few months back I started having nightmares. Around a week in I started to read before I went to sleep and they slowed down by a heck of a lot.

I almost always remember what was I dreaming about and when I wake up, I usually realize why did I dream it. Repressed feelings or issues/thoughts that are concerning you will appear in your dreams. You just have to look for what is the dream about and try solving the source of the bad feeling. If you don't solve it, you will be concerned about it even when you are awake and you will be depressive anyway, even if you don't realize the source.
The source of the stress is usually the source of the nightmares too.

"Cheese contains tryptophan – an amino acid which has been found to lower and relieve stress and also acts as a mild sedative that induces sleep. People who eat food high in tryptophan yield a higher dream recollection rate and more vivid dreams."
