Some more information would be great such as your OS.
Right click the speaker on the bottom right of the taskbar and click recording devices - does it show your Mic? if so double click on it and go to the listen tab and select listen and under custom tick all just so we can test it.
Some pic's of the recording tab and the playback tab would probably help me solve this for you.

Make sure you plugged the mic into the correct mic port, yeah I know, but I have done it myself. Make sure that if the set has a dial or mute switch on the line itself that you do not have the mic muted on that switch.
What's plugged into your Line-In port?

line in is definitely not for a mic. they are generally separate and you can get weird sound quality if you try to use a mic over it.

Line In is generally like an Auxiliary Port. For external source, like piping a turntable through your computers sound card.
I use mine for loopback. Using a splitter I can direct my mic and speaker output there and record. This was before the advent of Audacity though.
Also under your mic properties make sure neither is muted.

also pro tip: you can generally talk into your actual headphones (yes, the ear piece) if you connect it to the mic port, good to see if it's your actual mic that is fucked.
having temporarily broken my mic before which later mysteriously solved itself, i rigged up a ghetto solution of talking into the left earpiece on my sennheiser set and using zune earbuds for listening.
