|
|
Alright so my birthday is coming up. I have about $70 (USD). My 'budget' so to speak for my birthday is $150. That makes about $220 I can use.
I use my computer for a lot of gaming. I don't think I'll really be able to rack up a rig that can play something like Crysis, but I still want a better comp.
My current rig:
CPU: Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.40GHz (Socket type 478)
Motherboard Model: Soyo SY-P4I 845PE (ISA/Lite)
Motherboard Chipset: Intel 845PE (Brookdale-PE) + ICH4
Motherboard Slots: 4xPCI, 1xAGP v2.0
RAM: Row 0: 1GB DDR (PC3200)
Row 1: 256MB DDR (PC2700)
GPU: nVidia Geforce FX 5200 (128MB)
That should probably be more than you need, but if you need anything else, just ask. Also, it would be helpful if you could post links to the exact items I need to buy.
edit: I would like to mention that, since Christmas isn't too far off in the horizon, I can just upgrade some parts now, then wait until Christmas to finish off the build.

get rid of your 1gb and 256 mb sticks, and buy 2 sticks of 2GB.
that should be about 50 dollars (check on www.newegg.com)
After that attempt to get a new graphics card. Maybe a monitor instead? both are nice choices as your graphics card is DECENT atm.

And by then I'll have also raised up some decent money as well. I was thinking maybe using my current 220 to upgrade my mobo (to maybe one that uses cheaper and better RAM) and RAM now, then waiting until Christmas to get a good CPU/GPU.
And my monitor is good, nor do I really car about a keyboard or mouse, or any of those types of things.

Newegg, right?
OCZ SXS 400W
2GB Wintec DDR2-800 RAM
ASUS 9600GSO
Athlon II X2 + Gigabyte AMD 785
APEX Mid-tower case
I'm assuming that you can take your hard drive over from your old computer and use that OS. Monitor + accessories will also have to be stolen from your current computer.
Although it's about $25-$30 overprice (accounting for shipping and rebates, but no taxes), this thing is surprisingly good. Hell, it'll run Crysis medium-low. This thing will blow your current rig out of the water; AGP cards are too expensive and 2GB of DDR RAM are 2-4 times the price of similar DDR2 RAM. And of course, it's a new computer.
@Krue: FX5200 is not considered decent, performance is similar to integrated cards. Even at release, Geforce 5 sucked.

I highly suggest that you do not upgrade this rig for it would be a waste of money.

Can I maybe skip on the case and possibly use my current case? That'll shorten up the $30. If not, then I can also just raise up a little extra money.

Yeah, it should be fine if you reuse it.
You'll still need another drive, if both of your drives (HDD and optical) use PATA/IDE (which is the likely case, check for yourself). That will run up the price $20.

This.
tbh, you should just save up and get a new system. There's only so much you can do to an old computer.
For example, your motherboard supports a maximum of 2GB RAM.
And it's not compatible with dual core or quad core. If you're going to get a powerful graphics card, you might need to up the power source on your computer and whatnot, and purchase additional fans and coolers. That shit is going to cost you a fortune, which should be enough to buy you an average to above average computer by today's standards.

Huh? Your old case should work okay as long as no one soldered the motherboard or anything onto it.
I'm talking about the interface your devices use. If your current system uses SATA (which I highly doubt), then you can save yourself some money.

I mean, my better mobo + RAM won't do me any good now, but at least it will still work in my computer until I can get the better parts.
But so far, Superweapons' suggestions seem to all work out.

If it's an OEM computer, it either has a MicroATX form-factor motherboard or a case design that won't let you just screw in any standard board. Most motherboards have an IDE/PATA input, so you can use the hard drive if you really want to, but a DVD-RW will only run you about 20 USD, entirely worth it.
...Basically, ask for cash for your birthday, save until you can buy a decent build. Replacing everything (HDD & case included) would be better for performance, unless it's a relatively new hard drive.

Just build a new computer from scratch.
Getting a new motherboard and more RAM, new graphics card, more harddrive space and everything, but you're going to stick with the 2.4 gHz Intel Celeron?
