Whenever I try to attatch the debugger to a certain game (Battle for Middle Earth 1.02), it says 'Cheat engine failed to attatch to the process (Error=87)' and 'The thread that was supposed to attatch the debugger to the process failed'
I can attatch cheat engine itself to game.dat and find certain things, like resources, population, etc. and change them, the problem is there are pointers that switch the addresses every now and then, but like I said, the debugger flubs up. Any suggestions / work arounds? Oh, and neither program crashes, CE just detatches itself from the process.
Also, there are three processes that open with the game.
lotrbfme.exe
game.dat
e~.0001
I attatch it to game.dat cause that's apperantly the main game.

OK, I tried that, and it works for about, 2 minutes, then the game crashes after CE pops up saying an exception breakpoint occured or something (not assembler savvy so I don't have much clue what's going on). In the meantime though, it attatches the debugger and everything apperantly works fine. So... help?

that happened to me too. after you change the bytes to 0 to make the game debuggable, go back to settings/extra and uncheck the read/write memory option. it worked for me.

That is because ce doesn't handle any breakpoints not it's own. so if the game fires a breakpoint itself it will crash. (this isn't a idle debugger method)
not much you can do except each time you get that error write down the address, and then next time you run the game change the breakpoint (probably cc to 90, nop)

Or you could try the kernel debugger, with that you dont need to attach the debugger
