Not required. In fact, the most productive solar panel array in the world is in Russia.

You'd probably run yourself $5000 for a 500W solar panel. They aren't cheap.

Hmm, thanks for the helpful posts.

Anyway, i'm second guessing this. But i have a very simple solution (most people do this i presume) for keeping the power going when its dark. Backup Power... Say my computer is off ALL DAY. Where will that extra power go? Into a backup battery! Then that can assist in powering my computer.

Voltage/current fluctuation, drops in power, possible surges... you wouldn't be saving money in the long run, and do you even live in an area where the sun is going to hit the panel with its rays fairly continuously and with a decent enough intensity? You can't be serious.

I seen some 20W solar panels for under 200$ before, just have to find them. (20W should be more than enough).

He could obviously just hook up a few car batteries to store the power until he needs it...

he wont get dips in power then unless he's running his PC 24/7

or he could just feed the power right into the grid, and get the money from that to pay for the mains that's running your PC.
so you will get a stable flow. Very Happy

you could also try wind power, or if you live near a stream, micro hydro.
you could mix then up as well. Very Happy

Okay few things i want you all to read before you post again...

1) I am pretty sure you dont need to be in an extremely sunny area... There is sun everyone, mrite?

2) Batteries to store the energy, then send it to the computer! Com'on man, common sense!

--- Also, what solar panels will i need?? Links and things? I was looking at a site and it said like 20w and 180w and all that stuff and i was like, wut?

So if anyone could assist me thatd be great Smile I do live near a stream, it is just not really strong enough Sad Dries out during the summer too Surprised

The solar panels use light that can penetrate the clouds Smile
it don't have to be bright sunlight.

you can also get light sensitive probes put on the corner's of the solar panels and hook up an electric motor so the panels will move towards the light. Wink

It's possible, but not realistic. You'd need hundreds of feet of 0-2 gauge cable which that alone will cost more than what you'd pay the electric company to operate the PC for a few years. You'd also need some 12v batteries with at least 400aH capacity for a standard PC, the panels which in themselves will cost $5,000+, power regulation, a custom PSU that would take a 12v input. You'd need to rig up a platform that rotated the panels during the day to assure they were getting the most amount of sunlight, etc. Nice idea, but far more trouble than it's worth, unless you're in the middle of nowhere and have no power.
