@bronox: It is hard for us. It is easy for you (20 secs, right - you already know what to do SINCE YOU MADE IT). Stop posting passworded archives. The only way to go at them is brute-forcing, as I doubt anyone can have a go at RAR's RSA algo. If it were that simple, you'd see tutorials or patches for RAR archives all over the internets! Very Happy

Ehhh what he is talking about it he used stenography to put somehting in the picture. To see if you "got the right password" you can enter it into the rar file and see if it works.

It's still not too easy since we don't have the original file he used to stenography. We havea gif version, not his converted to jpeg. He could have used any program to convert it with nearly any settings.

The biggest challange is to find out what he used, and what settings where used. Then when you have a copy of the "original" with no stego, you can easily extract the password scheme. Then you have to crack it.

So it's like you gave us a map to from point A to B. But all we know is what country it's in - and can see point B. We have no idea where to start, just what the result looks like.

How does RAR password protection work?

It encrypts the file using the password as a key. The rar header contains a crc of the correctly decrypted file. When you enter a password it decrypts the contents with the password as a key and compares the crc of the decrypted files against the correct crc. If they don't match, you have garbage and it notifies you that the crc doesn't match.
