There is database support in the Express editions. I have done everything from Access, mySQL, MSSQL using the Express editions. If not running on a server though you just need to add an ODBC connection in Windows to get your apps going.

VB 2010 is a nice change, was using AutoIt3.
I saw Wiccaan's VB6 trainer source floating around on the net, but it didn't seem to work in VB 2010. I'm about 10% of the way through rewriting the memory class, but would prefer to not reinvent the wheel, any ideas?

Because VB.NET is a huge change from VB6. You are better off not using VB at all though and just using C#. I don't really encourage you to base anything off that trainer source/kit either as it is fairly old. In .NET you can do about 75% of the work without API now.
As for express limitations, there isn't really many for .NET languages. Most of the limitations are with C++. For C#/VB.NET Express you miss out on ASP.NET, Silverlight, and Azure tools.
SQL Server Express comes with VS2010 Express as well, and it basically has all the features Pro does with the exception of some business tools and such. Either way, you are better off just using MySQL anyway as its both free and fully featured without a price tag.
Small amount of limitations:
- No Add-in / Macro support.
- No remote debugging support.
- No solution folder support.
- No mobile / web development.
Granted the SDK/developer tools for Windows Phone are free and use their own copy of VS2010 Express so if you want mobile development you can still do it.

Ouch! I just spent the last 24 hours porting my trainer to VB and am almost done. Looks like C# might be a project for once this is done, not sure... it hurts my eyes to read your comment, but I respect your advice and opinion so I feel somewhat compelled to follow it.
