Sorry, sort of a newbish question, but I've always wondered what the difference between C++ and Visual C++ is. I know they're similar, but what are the main differences? I'm doing C++ right now as my first language, and I'm just wondering if I should learn Visual C++ too.

If your already learning C++ then keep focused on that, you can learn visual C++ later. In Short, Visual C++ is C++ with some extra libraries and functions called the MFC (Microsoft Foundation Classes) to make Windows programming easier.
The Visual C++ compiler is also a bit more advanced. Even though it includes syntax highlighting and auto complete stuff, getting to know the crazy linker settings and compilers settings can be quite daunting for a beginner.
In short, stick with C++ for now and work on the M$ visual C++ later.

Visual C++ is Microsoft's compiler, MFC/.NET stuff is totally optional, and it is a very good compiler so I recommend you learn ANSI C++ and use VC as your compiler.
To what poent said, if the GUI scares you, drop it. Use the command line tools, so all the options are right in front of your face and not hidden in some menu you have to spend 20 minutes to get to.
