In terms of raw polygon count and processing speed, gaming consoles are getting to the point of diminishing returns, most people don't notice a difference between 60fps and 120fps, and Xbox One already supports 4k in their newest slim model...so what's next?

Switch clones.

The future will be handheld/home console/tablet all-in-ones. Hardware progression on desktop computing has slowed, but has been rapidly accelerating for small form factor computers in phones, tablets and smart watches. ARM processors allow for tablets to be able to wake from sleep mode at ease without needing fans to cool them down. Increasingly we are entering an era where you don't have to sacrifice portability for power.

And speaking of diminishing returns, as the graphical improvements of each new generation of consoles becomes indistinguishable, consumers will start to gravitate towards aesthetics, quirks, and gimmicks rather than pure horsepower.

"BUT...BUT...VR?" Virtual reality will not go away, nor will it become the industry standard; it will be an optional add-on. Not everyone wants to lose visual and audio awareness when they play video games. Some people play games and talk to friends and family members in the room at the same time. Some of them talk and text on the phone during loading screens. Some of them do schoolwork and chores between matches. VR isn't practical for the lowest common denominator and will never be the primary interface of a console.

There are 4 different video game markets right now: cellphone/tablet, handheld, console, and PC. If Microsoft created a Switch clone with Windows 10, they could reach all four markets and reach the lowest common denominator of customers. That is the future of gaming.

so are you saying that sony and microsoft will give the ability to bring and play xbox and play station games on win10?

if so, that means they are in competition with steam and they want to bring it down?

fuck!

If Microsoft would ever run Windows on their next console it would probably be Windows 10 S or a locked down variant. Not only because of the paradox of buying games from external sources like Steam, but because having multiple applications open at once will slow down and glitch games and ruin developer optimization.

I'd say if anything Nintendo copied Sony/Microsoft rather than the other way around.

PlayStation already offers the handheld experience if you own a PSVita to link to your PS4/PS4 Pro. You can stream games to the Vita and fully remote access and control the PS4 with it. Is the Vita outdated in terms of competing directly with the Switch, sure, but features wise, they are on part with each other.

Xbox offers similar as well allowing you to access your Xbox on a Windows 10 machine with their streaming sync stuff, as well as accessing your Xbox Live account on mobile devices. (Windows devices specifically get more features/access etc. but that is soon to change now that Windows Phone is dead.)

I wouldn't say either company is going to copy the Switch since they all have the same stuff already. If anything Microsoft is just going to extend their mobile support further and PlayStation may come out with a 2nd gen Vita that is more up to date hardware wise to be on the same level as the Switch, if not better.

PS4 and Xbox target a different audience specificially with their consoles, being systems that aim at giving the best performance at the cost of being an at-home console. They both offer a mobile experience on their platforms, it is just far from their primary target or focus so they are less popular and not as mobile-mainstream as the Switch is aiming to be.

Nintendo has always been a more mobile focused company with their various hand-held consoles. While they do have generations of in-home consoles, they are generally always far behind the current gen competition in the market. (ie. the GameGuard, Wii and WiiU all fell far behind the at-time available PS/Xbox counter-parts.)

They are just different markets and aimed at different target audiences. The push for more mobile features is nothing new on any of the platforms though.

Xbox is already running Windows 10 btw.
