Hey Dark Byte, are you absolutely sure about that rootkit thing? How is cheat engine able to see it? Is there another way to absolutely confirm that something like this is present on my PC? And would external harddrives be affected?

You either have an incompetent anti virus that is blocking CE and gets tricked by renaming. (any AV that gets tricked by renaming files should be uninstalled ASAP and replaced)

Or your system has actually been compromised by a thus far unknown rootkit that is most likely logging your keystrokes and password, and using your system to attack other systems.
CE can be used to scan kernel memory and let a person look at the memory realtime and see hooks and abnormalities that an automated tool might ignore.

Seeing as how I don't have an anti-virus software (other than windows defender, which I tried disabling), I think it's safe to assume that this is indeed a rootkit.

There are a few other reasons I believe it may be a rootkit, but I won't divulge them here.

I have already starting backing up important files on an external harddrive. Is there anything I should be concerned about in that regard? Can the rootkit attach itself in some way to the external harddrive (or any of the files on that harddrive)?

it could be a BIOS/UEFI rootkit that loads before the OS is loaded, but those are rare

I don't know if this thread is closed, but I was wondering if I might also have gotten a rootkit on my computer. I got the same message when trying to start CE. But it did work by renaming the .exe file.
I do have Avast installed and I tried to uninstall it and then try CE again, but it was same as before

likely yes.
something checks tor a file named cheatengine and blocks execution. If it's not your AV then it has to be something worse

i recommend reinstalling windows and see how that goes

edit: what you can also try is renaming cheatengine-x86_64.exe to goat-x86_64.exe and run that. If that also fails to run then it's just something stupid. But it it works, reinstall/format
