Some higher end gaming computers use 1000 watts on load and far surpass your air conditioner as your most costly electronic device in yearly expenses. Fuel efficiency is often one of the biggest factors when purchasing a new car. Why don't we think in the same terms when buying computers?

They do though? Not sure whose reviews you are reading but most have a section on power consumption

There is a big difference between a basic desktop system with a single graphics card, a few hard drives etc. which will only ever pull a few hundred watts, vs. a machine with quad-SLI, or 32 hard drives etc. that require that kind of power draw.
You are never going to use 1k watts in a more or less basic/gaming PC. You wont even come close unless you start adding a ton of extra hardware that will slowly pull up the wattage usage. (Things like more video cards, hard drives, water cooling, etc.)
If you want to get a general idea on how much power your system will use:

To give you an example, here is my desktop. I use it for work/gaming/etc.

Even with the hardware I have, my system is estimated to only pull ~400watts at 90% CPU load. To push 1k watts you are going to need to go a bit overkill on hardware and so on to push that high.
