Hey guys, so I've been trying *again* to use pointers on Mame, and again I've failed ha.
The game is "Fighting Bujutsu", so I got the Timer address, a 2bytes value that starts at 3600dec, by using the "manual pointer search style", when I look to what writes it I got: mov[rdx],r9.
Searching for the [rdx] address as 4bytes hex(1D8DBFA0 atm) gives me 0 results...
So I went to the "pointer scan for this address" try, and I've tested many different "maximum offset values" with "max level" combinations, like "max offset val 80000" and "max level 8", and every time it shows "Pointer Paths:0" right in the first scan!
Is it me? Is it personal? What am I doing wrong? What's it?

pointer scan won't work on emulators. (nor the method where you debug, at least not the way you want)
1: the pointer values are relative to the physical address of the emulated system, but in the emulator that doesn't start at 0 (I won't even go into emulators that emulate paging)
2: most likely the pointer is stored in 16-bit (codesegment:offset) so completely incompatible with a 32/64 bit pointer.
---
what you could do is find the virtual address of physical address 0 in the emulator, and try to find references to the address you're interested in yourself.
e.g if your address is at 1d8dbfa0 and the physical address 0 starts at 1d8d0000 then you should look for the value bfa0.
---
One thing you CAN use the pointerscanner for is to find the physical address 0 virtual address.
Just find address 0 and then pointerscan for that. The emulator likely has that stored somewhere (unless it's PSXe in which case it's 20000000 )

Thanks for the reply boss!
I've to say that, while I understand what you are talking, I have absolutely no idea on how to proceed from there haha, is there a tuto for dummies around the web on how to find the initial addresses in its VM? Uncle Google seems to now know much about it and I don't even know how to start the scan.
On a side note, I was using Mame64, but I've tested Mame32x today using the same game (which is 10x slower) and I got 16gbs of results using the pointer scan, but when I try the re-scan it always returns 0 results, so maybe it's because mame isn't starting at 0 like you said.
