How do I cheat?

I was wondering if modding a game to receive any expected values from server to input a desired or modified value to your game work? for example: lets say instead of earning 1 gold; we mod said game to earn 100.

It depends on the game and how it is coded overall. In some games you can exploit things like resending packets that mimic a method of obtaining gold (such as selling an item, picking an item up, etc.). If the game is poorly coded they will not do validation on the packet and allow you to fake the data over and over.

This is fairly rare to happen though anymore. Most games are coded with stuff like this in mind. However some lesser quality games still have some exploits like this in them.

As for directly editing your gold in 99.9% of the games online today, you wont be able to do anything with directly editing your money. The server will be what is in charge of it. (This also depends on the game type. Games like Phantasy Star Online where your character data is stored locally and not on a server can be fully manipulated etc.)

Keep in mind as well, we do not allow multiplayer / online game hacking on this site if you mention the games name or anything about it that will expose what you are referring to. So there is typically not much we can do to help with anything like this without you giving away the name and breaking the rules.

So you're saying that if for example:
I find the code that inc's my gold each time I kill a monster, ill modify it to add 3 gold to me each kill (simple code injection).
Then most of the modern games will detect it by this game's own ways and act accordingly?

It means that its almost impossible to hack these games (from client-side)

The most common way to exploit gold on an online game is to use packet injection. (Or some method of exploiting the game.) Simple search and replace stuff with Cheat Engine will not work in 99% of the online games today for stuff like gold or major stats for your character.

When you sell something to an npc, you can monitor the packet that is sent to the npc. Then you can attempt to resend the packet multiple times to see if the game will let you resell an item you no longer own. In most games now, this will be protected against, but in some it can work still.

As for exploits there are sometimes ways to open multiple menus at the same time that you shouldn't normally that will both manipulate an item. If done properly in some games, you can cause that item to be used by both windows at the same time. In some cases this can duplicate the item etc.

Its all a matter of finding exploits or holes in the games code that you are playing with.

if we do manage to hack the server and able to manipulate data stored in it.

Would this be considered illegal hack?

If things in the game can be used as trade for actual currency or other actual objects yes, it can be considered a form of fraud.
