Why did they ditch the old way of making programming languages, and go to .NET?

I'm guessing this should go in general programming, but I'm no moderator.

Nothing got ditched, old languages still exist and are still maintained and developed.

The only language that really "changed" due to .NET was Visual Basic. While the change was rather big for it, the purpose of it wasn't, which is for rapid application development (RAD). (Which has always been the purpose of VB.)

By 'they' and you saying '.NET' I assume you mean Microsoft. They still develop and support their C/C++ linker and compiler as well which is [much] older then. NET and wasn't ditched either.

If you want to read the reason why .NET was made check these out:

Also the benefits of .NET mean easier distribution of things you develop, IE. no inclusion of DLL files anymore.

With the exception that you have to distribute the whole .net framework with your application

Sure, small software developers neglect that, but they should do that for people that use windows XP and earlier else the user will get an undefined error when they try to launch the app
So basically it's worse than the old Visual Basic. Instead of distributing one or two reasonable sized dlls you have to distribute it with a 200MB installer

If the main thing you mean is that it is an intermediate language, Java was released 7 years before it, that concept is nothing new.

Not a major deal if the user uses a legit copy of Windows and keeps it updated. Windows Update has suggested the installation of .NET since it was released, and if the user has updated to Sp3 (like they should have anyway) it would be installed automatically as well.

Most of any actual installation package for any software that uses a .NET language includes the framework as well.

I didn't say that, I said they could.
They could of easily continued off of the old way of languages, and might be even better.

I personally only make private things in .net, since most people don't have the latest version installed on their system.

Since all versions of Vista and 7 come with .NET 3.5 installed on them and XP SP2 comes with .NET 2, I don't see why it's an issue. If you keep Windows up to date, you'll have .NET 4 installed regardless of XP/Vista/Win7.

If you don't the required version of the .NET framework, it comes up with a message box stating that you need to download it. It's not difficult to find, either.
