You could try Game Maker 7 (Lite), its not ideal but its free and east to learn, you can try RPG Maker XP but although it has a 30 day trial it costs $60 afterwards. Its even better but costing

What i did is got rmxp for free following this tutorial.
You can get rmvx just as easily, but i prefer rmxp over rmvx.

I ahve used VX has tonnes of useful features such as auto-chests, doors and teleports. Then there's the fact that it's the love child of RM95 and RMXP, which makes it the lord of RM.

The only downside is the new 1st person battle style, which is kind of cool, but I'd like it if you could pick the battle style you want for your game.
