I have adobe cs4 but do I need adobe image ready?

Put the path in the nurb or the other way around (I forgot).

Nope, just open the (uncompressed) .avi file into PS, go to save for web and devices, and change the settings that I said (image is in the first post).

And epic failure, that's a great start.
Now, drag the path into the extrude nurbs.
As in, click and drag the path (not the green one), hover over the green one until there's a down arrow on it. Let go, and it should be 3D.

Not sure about C4D but with 3DMax you can export transparent pngs when you have an animation. That would be better for an avatar.
