Cheat Engine Beginner's Guide

Welcome to my Cheat Engine Beginner's Guide.
If you're new to Cheat Engine, I highly suggest you read this.
If you're not new to the forums, but still inexperienced with the program, well...
This might actually help your forum etiquette, so I suggest you read it anyway.
Cool

This topic, since the 2007/8/02 update, also has a Miscellaneous Links section.
There you can find various helpful links dealing with pretty much anything to do with Cheat Engine.
If you have helpful links that you'd like to contribute, please share them!
If they're found to be useful, you'll get credit for supplying the link.
The topic's original creator will obviously get full credit for the guide though.
「Unless other credit is listed, then the shared credit will be supplied」

So you want to start hacking your game(s)?

1. Download Cheat Engine.
The first step is obviously downloading Cheat Engine.
If you can't complete this, I suggest you come back in a few years.
You can download the latest version of Cheat Engine from the Downloads page.

2. Complete the Tutorial.
After you've downloaded Cheat Engine, be sure to go through the tutorials.
If you don't understand them, or get stuck on a specific step, look through some of the guides in the "Cheat Engine Tutorials" section of the forums.

If you don't know where that is, go here:
http://forum.cheatengine.org/viewforum.php?f=7
There are a lot of different tutorials covered there, not just the Cheat Engine tutorial itself.

3. Practice what you've learned.
It's the best way to make progress.
Don't expect people to baby you.
You've got a brain, use it, learn to hack by completing tutorials and practicing what you've learned.
If you tried hacking hacking a game and failed, before doing anything...
That's right, use Search!

3. Use the search button.
This is the most important step and will save you, and us, a lot of grief.
If you have a problem, don't immediately make a topic about it.
Usually someone else has already had the same problem and chances are someone already helped them.

4. Don't be afraid to ask for help.
If you still don't find what you need, only then make a topic about it.
This should only be done after you've searched.
Most people readily make a topic only to get flamed or told to use search.
The reason is that we don't like having to explain the same thing twenty times.
The search button is your friend, it doesn't bite, and it won't hurt or impregnate you.
So it's 100% safe, and people will like you more for using it.

When making a topic to ask for help, do the following.
1. Make it in the correct section.
2. Ask nicely, begging will only get you flamed.
Irregardless, you'll probably have one or two people calling you a "noob" if you post asking for help, but generally the people here can be nice.
So just ignore them.

I didn't find what I was looking for by Searching.

Before you even say this, make sure you actually read a thread or two on the subject.
A lot of time people say "I couldn't find hacks for it..."
When clearly in more than one of the threads it's been said that there are no hacks for the game at this time.
So you making a post asking to give you hacks isn't going to get you any further.

If you're absolutely positive that you couldn't find what you're looking for, only then make a thread.
Depending on the game there are specific sections for that.
Be sure to check if your game has it's own section before posting.
This will save the mods a lot of time and annoyance.
Below I'll list the different forum sections, their state, and their purpose.
I'll start by listing games that have their own sections on Cheat Engine.

There are also Non-Specific Game Sections.
You can use these to request help with hacking any game, if it doesn't have it's own section
Once again, before you post, be sure to search.
A lot of times people try to hack similar games, and chances are, someone has already asked about the one you want.
I'll now cover the Non-Specific Game Sections.
All of these are Open, so instead of their status, I'll be covering their purpose.

Quote:

--------------------------------------------------------
====== Non-Specific Game Sections ======
--------------------------------------------------------

Section: General Gamehacking
Purpose:
Labyrnth describes it perfectly in his own words, so...
Please read: .: General Gamehacking Guide Lines :.
Link: http://forum.cheatengine.org/viewforum.php?f=3

Section: Single-Player Cheat Requests
Purpose:
Here you can discuss any hacking that relates to Single-Player Games that don't have their own section.
Link: http://forum.cheatengine.org/viewforum.php?f=11

Section: Multi-Player Cheat Requests
Purpose:
Here you can discuss any hacking that relates to Multi-Player Games that don't have their own section.
Link: http://forum.cheatengine.org/viewforum.php?f=12

Section: Flash Games
Purpose:
Here you can discuss any hacking that relates to Flash Games that don't have their own section.
Link: http://forum.cheatengine.org/viewforum.php?f=40

As I've said in their purpose, these sections should only be posted in if the game you're requesting information on does not have it's own section.
There are two more helpful sections that I haven't covered yet.
These are the Tables/Trainers and Anti-Cheat Bypassing sections.

Tables/Trainers:
In this section you can find Tables and Trainers people have created for various games [and sometimes programs].
You can download existing ones, or upload/share your own.
If you plan on uploading a trainer or table, make sure that it was made with Cheat Engine's trainer maker.
Don't link to outside downloads, in other words, upload it onto the forums.

Before downloading anything off of the forums, check out the part labeled:
"Downloads from the Cheat Engine Forums:"

Anti-Cheat Bypassing:
This is one of those sections you only use after having used the Search button extensively.
The reason is that many games often use the same protection.
This means that even if your game doesn't have it's own section, the bypass for the Anti-Cheat software could already have been posted.
Going to this section doesn't mean you'll magically get your bypass.
There are tutorials on how to achieve the bypasses yourself, and discussions on possibly bypass methods for software that hasn't been bypassed yet.
Like I said earlier, we aren't here to do your work for you.
Sometimes bypasses will be posted, and you can use them.
But other times, you will have to either work with us on achieving a bypass, or work on your own.
Life is tough, get used to it.
As with any other section, read the rules before you post.

Other Sections:
There are obviously other sections too.
If I'm not mistaken, the only sections I haven't covered are Random Spam, Cheat Engine Source and the General Programming.
If you don't know what those are for, well then that's rather sad.
If all else fails, go there and look for yourself.

Miscellaneous Links:

This is my own little Sub-Section within this topic.
Below I'll list various miscellaneous tutorials, guides, etc. that people might find helpful.
If you know of any guides, tutorials, etc. that could be useful, please either post them here, or pm them to me.
I'll read over them, and if I think that they could be helpful I'll put them in the topic.

Notice:

Downloads from the Cheat Engine forums:
It's recommended that you scan any downloads before opening them.
Not because the forums are unsafe, but rather because some people are idiots.
Either they have malicious intent, or their computer was infected and they didn't bother to make sure the file itself was clean.

Also, think before you act...
If you scanned the download and it ends up being a batch file [This means it has the .bat extension], do not run it.
The only time you should ever run a .bat file is after inspecting it's functions yourself.
Make sure it isn't harmful, then, and only then, run it if you're sure of what it does.

Miscellaneous Links Credits:
I in no way garuntee that the credits are 100% accurate or up to date.
The credits are given according to how they appear.
People who supply the links get finder's credit.
Topic Starters get full credit unless listed otherwise within their topics.
I can't be expected to magically know if some one else contributed if the original topic creator didn't list them.
Neither can I prove who did, or didn't in fact write the guides.
If you have a problem with the credits, take it up with the topic creators.
Any change to the credits can be found in the original topics, they aren't garunteed to be up to date.
The credits are listed as last viewed by me, or by the topic suppliers.
If needed a Credit date system can be put in place that will show when the credits were last viewed by myself.
The above listed credits are up to date with 2007/8/02, as listed in the Topics themselves..

Conclusion:

Well, that's my guide.
I tried to make it as simple as possible.
I know it might not be perfect, but English isn't my first language, so if someone sees something that needs to be re-worded, don't be afraid to tell me.
This is as much as I can help you, the rest is up to your brain, and you.
If you ever need help in the future, come check the guide.
It'll still be here, unless the forums wipe or something.
So make it a bookmark or just save the link in a text file, whatever works for you.
Just remember to use it, instead of posting in the wrong sections and so on.
And remember:

Use Search!

Still lost?
If you're still lost about what section to post in, or something like that, please ask here.
I'm sure you'll get helped in no time.
Even if not by my, by someone else.

Best Luck,
-Toxic
